Chawla just needs one ball to finish it, steps out of his crease, gets to the pitch of the ball, and sends it screaming away to the extra cover boundary
CSK vs KKR, 1st Match, Group A at Hyderabad, Sep 17 2014 - Match Result
KKR won by 3 wickets (with 6 balls remaining)
11.35pm That's it from us then. Hope you enjoyed the game, and keep coming back for our live coverage of all the Champions League matches and every other cricket match that happens in the world (well, except the one in your backyard, but we're working on that as well). Till the next time, it's bye bye from me and Chandan.
11.30pm Presentation time. The sponsors have been thanked, the dignitaries introduced. One of them, incidentally, is Michael Kasprowicz, as a "representative of the CLT20".
Gautam Gambhir: "I think after the first 15 overs we thought we could have restricted them to an even smaller total. We didn't start off well in the chase but we always knew it was a matter of a couple of good overs. We have a lot of depth in our line-up and a lot of firepower. We were looking to go hard at the top, it didn't work. The way Russell batted, the way Ryan batted, unbelievable. I need to mention Sunil Narine, he is a special guy. Giving nine runs in four overs, always controls the game for us. This is one tournament we haven't won. Guys are pretty motivated to go out there and turn it around for us."
Andre Russell is the man of the match "Was just positive, coming from the CPL, backing myself all the time. I'm a bit used to getting the team over the line, well done to Tendo as well. We just kept rotating it, he told me to stay positive. When you work hard in training, it becomes natural [hitting big]. It's all about positive. T20 cricket, I love it. Smashin' it. Was a very good wicket, it didn't matter who the bowler was. Wasn't much spin in the wicket. Backed myself against Ashwin and Jadeja to hit them over the line."
Ten Doeschate: "It was a very good wicket. I just tried to watch the ball early on and strategise as I went along. From the first ball I thought it was a good wicket, and the white ball does swing for 3 or 4 overs. I don't think it mattered what I said to him [Russell]. When someone has that sort of firepower, you just leave it to him."
Dhoni: "I don't think we had enough runs on the board. Their spinners bowled very well. I didn't know if we could defend 160 on this track, but the pacers bowled very well. The difference was their lower-order batting, especially Russell and the other guy [I assume he means ten Doeschate]." At some point, he also says Shiv-narine instead of Narine, but he's pretty frazzled right now, so you can excuse him those slips of the tongue. "Ishwar should have told Mohit that the captain has told me to bowl at this end," he says, when asked about the strange bowling change.
11.20pm Tremendous win for Kolkata, considering the situation they were in when Russell walked in - 51 for 5, with 107 to get from 66 balls. All of their top four had fallen for single-digit scores. But Russell played some exceptional shots, going deep in his crease to mess up the lengths of the bowlers, and Ryan ten Doeschate kept his calm and pulled off the big shots whenever needed. They've won with an over to spare, and it's their tenth win in a row.
Chawla is the new man, and Ashwin goes around the wicket
Gone! Back of a length, and he chopped it to Jadeja at backward point and they set off immediately. It wasn't a direct hit, but he threw it hard and flat into the keeper's gloves and replays confirm Cummins is definitely short of the crease
carrom-ball, full, on leg stump, and he clears his front leg and swings through the line to send that soaring over long-on. Fifty to Tendo now
Vamsi: "@junai_csk: That's Gambhir's way of contributing to the team!"
carrom-ball on the stumps, and this time he flicks it far enough to Nehra's left to run the single
on the pads, and he can't get it past Nehra, who runs in quickly from square leg
tossed up outside off, and he drives it hard but straight back to the bowler
Ten off 12 now. Looks like Mohit will bowl this over. Or is it Ashwin? Mohit is ready, at the top of his mark, but I think Dhoni's told him to give it to Ashwin, and this time he can do so, since he hasn't started his run-up. Here's Ashwin.
slower ball outside off, and he comes forward and pushes that towards cover with soft hands
junaid_csk: "someone plz ask Gambhir to remove his pads!!!!"
full and wide, and he leans into that and caresses it to the right of McCullum at deep cover point
slower ball again, outside off, and this time he slaps it too close to McCullum at deep cover point to run a second
slower ball outside off, and he comes forward and flat-bats it to deep cover
short and wide, and he opens his bat face and steers it towards third man, where Ishwar runs to his right and almost overruns the ball
back of a length slower ball, comes in towards off stump, and he can't beat point with his cut
18 from 18, four wickets in hand. Who will bowl this one? It's Bravo
low full-toss outside off, and he opens his bat face and steers it to the right of third man
low full-toss on off stump and he clips it away down to long-on
full and straight, and he pokes it away to long-on
whoopsie. Dhoni, of all people, fumbles under pressure. The ball slants down the leg side, and bounces towards the keeper. He simply didn't bend low enough and the ball hits the tip of his gloves and runs away between his legs
That changes the balance somewhat. Pat Cummins comes in now.
what a reply! That was the yorker again, and Russell looks to make some room but before he can bring his bat down his off stump is doing somersaults behind him
short, and he's cramped for room but he still manages to swing his bat across the line and pull that away behind square. Actually, he took a huge step, almost back onto his stumps, to convert a decent length ball into a shortish ball
starts with a yorker on off stump, and all he can do is bring his bat down on it and poke that away into the off side
Eighteen from that over means they now need 32 from 24 balls. From ten an over to eight an over in the space of six balls.
Gaurav Manchand: "Mohit Sharma has dropped Ashish Nehra's Man of the Match award." Well, he comes on now, and has one over to try and win it back. Left-arm around
heaves at this length ball outside off, and he gets a thick outside edge that flies to the third man boundary
Someone in the crowd has pocketed the ball, and he's refusing to give it back to Faf du Plessis on the boundary, judging by what the TV commentators are saying. The fourth umpire runs out with a box of balls.
