As it happened: Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2022 - Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

By Alan Gardner and Sidharth Monga

Punjab Kings win by 54

The aggressive approach has worked. They came out hard with the bat even when they lost two early wickets. They came out harder with the ball, swinging nit, bouncing it, taking early wickets before the legspinners choked the second half of the chase out. PBKS are making early claims to a promising season while CSK now have zero wins in three games. The playoff looks distant now. Thanks for joining us for today's fun. See you tomorrow.

Liam Livingstone is not happy with just the smashing fifty he scored, but is now on a hat-trick. He has bowled legspin even to Shivam Dube, and a slider takes a thick edge to short third man. Then the modern heavy bat proves to be Bravo's downfall. Just a forward defensive carries to Livingstone, who takes two steps to his left and then dives full length to take it with his left hand. The win probability now 0.5%.

CSK's depth?

They may be five down, but they still have Dwayne Bravo and Dwaine Pretorious to follow. MS Dhoni will not hit out till before the end but he has Dube, Bravo and Pretorious to do that. It is of course a far-fetched thought as their win probability of 1% says at 72 for 5 in 13 overs.

It is a blowout

Odean Smith into the action now by bouncing out Ambati Rayudu, following him, making him fend. CSK 36 for 5. Win probability 3%. MS Dhoni has to bat now.

Arshdeep joins the party

Another played-on dismissal for PBKS as Ravindra Jadeja gets an inside edge to Arshdeep Singh, who gets it to nip back in. The white ball moving for about six overs is something that has been unique to this season. CSK 23 for 4. Their win probability is well under 10% now

Vaibhav Arora announces himself

He is tall, he is strong, and he is swinging the ball both ways. Now he has the wickets of Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali.
Arora plays domestic cricket for Himachal Pradesh where his promising career haas been obstructed by the pandemic. Even in first-class cricket, Arora has a fantastic average and strike rate of 20.76 and 40.8 even though he has had the opportunity to play just the nine matches. In domestic T20 matches, he has conceded runs at under seven an over.
CSK 22 for 3.

Gaikwad gets just one

Shock. Horror. Ruturaj Gaikwad has not lived up to the promise of turning it around after two early failures in an IPL season. He has edged Kagiso Rabada to first slip. which is followed by Robin Uthappa getting a massive leading edge off the debutant Vaibhav Arora. CSK 14 for 2 in 2.2 overs. Their win probability is down to 25%.

Innings break

Bravo finishes things off with a cannily constructed final over that costs just five runs, and CSK will need 181 to get their first W on the board. They pulled things back brilliantly, having conceded 72 runs from the powerplay; Punjab Kings only managed 108 from the next 14, as the innings fell a way after Liam Livingstone's dismissal for 60 off 32. Chris Jordan finished with 2 for 23, excellent figures on a high-scoring ground. Time for me to hand you over to Sid Monga for the second half of match 11.

Six and out (again)!

Rahul Chahar manages to smack a couple of boundaries off the 19th, bowled by Pretorius, but then becomes the eighth Kings wicket to fall. Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn't help giving up six from the fourth ball of the over, stepping on the boundary rope as he tried to fling the ball back into play... but two balls later, Chahar miscued towards long-off where Bravo took a safe running catch.

Odean, oh dear!

Smith holes out to long-on, and Punjab's late-innings slump continues. True to their template, they are going down hitting, aiming for 200-plus rather than knock it around for 180. But Jordan benefits again, pitching it up towards the blockhole and Smith is unable to clear the long boundary out towards long-on.

Jordan bags Shahrukh

Punjab Kings lose wickets in consecutive overs for the third time in the innings, and their hopes of getting anywhere near 200 are right in the balance. Shahrukh Khan is the next batter to fall, outfoxed by Jordan cramping him for room and forcing a big shot to the long boundary - the ball was a low full toss, but it came off the toe of the bat to be swallowed by Pretorius running in at deep backward square.
The powerful Odean Smith, whose fireworks won Kings their opening match, has been joined in the middle by No. 8 Kagiso Rabada. Looks like Jordan, Bravo and Pretorius to try to close out for CSK.

Sharma drama over

A lively debut IPL innings from Jitesh Sharma comes to an end via a tame scoop to short third. Pretorius helps CSK put the brakes on once again, with both teams vying for the advantage going into the death overs. Sharma, the 28-year-old Vidharba batter making his IPL debut, popped Moeen Ali into the crowd at deep square leg from his second ball, hooked the returning Choudhary for another six in the 13th, then dumped Jadeja high over long-on in the next over. But CSK only conceded a single boundary from overs 11-14, with Kings unable to fully break away - and Sharma then fell looking to manufacture a reverse-scoop off a Pretorius slower ball to leave them 146 for 5.

Livi-gone

Wry smile from Rayudu, this time he has held on. Same bowler, similar shot and Livingstone won't be getting away with this one - a sliced cut that loops to short third, where Rayadu pouches it, and is then too embarrassed to celebrate. Livingstone falls for 60 off 32, with Kings suffering an untimely wobble at just past halfway.

Fifty for Livingstone

His first in the IPL, and it's come from just 27 balls. He got there with a big miscue, top-edging a Bravo cutter all the way over fine leg - but they all count. Livingstone's previous best score in the competition was 44 off 26 for Rajasthan Royals all the way back in 2019.

Livingstone's lives

The big-hitting Englishman is clearly the wicket CSK want, and they could have had him twice in the space of four balls. Jadeja brought himself on in the seventh over, and was immediately carted back down the ground into the sightscreen; but he should have made the breakthrough later in the over, Livingstone striding out only to slice a looping chance to third - where the waiting Ambati Rayudu saw it squirm from his grasp. Next over, Dwaine Pretorius managed to induce a thin edge down the leg side, only for Dhoni to ground the ball as he attempted to complete a diving catch in his glove tips.
After eight overs, Kings were going nicely on 89 for 2, as CSK called for their strategic timeout.

Livi lets fly

After a rocky start, Punjab Kings got back on track to produce the second-highest powerplay score of this year's IPL. Liam Livingstone, the million-dollar man, hit his stride in Kings red after a stuttering start, racing to 38 from 15 deliveries, while Dhawan then found the boundary three times in Dwayne Bravo's first over to leave then well placed on 72 for 2 after six.
After a few sighters and a flamingo-flick for three, Livingstone helped himself to a six and a four in Choudhary's second over, and then dialled up the aggression in his next, taking five boundaries off the young left-armer. The first ball was smoked into the crowd at deep midwicket for a 108-metre six - the shorter boundary, not that it mattered in this case - to be followed by fours down the ground, over cover and sliced past short third. With a couple of wides thrown in, Livingstone then iced the over for 26 by swinging another six on to the leg-side boundary marker.

Six and out!

Second over, second ball... second wicket for CSK! Again some sloppy cricket from Punjab Kings, and this time Bhanuka Rajapaksa is the man to pay. Chris Jordan's first delivery in CSK yellow was poor, a half-tracker on the hip that Rajapaksa hoicked high over fine leg. But his next resulted in a dismissal, though plenty of the credit goes to that man, MSD. Having tucked the ball into the on side, Rajapaksa was well down the pitch before realising that Shikhar Dhawan wasn't coming. Jordan raced after it and although his throw missed the stumps, there was Dhoni racing up to grab the ball and underam into the stumps in one smooth move, with Rajapaksa inches short.

Four and out!

CSK make the breakthrough from the second ball of the innings, and it's the Kings captain, Mayank Agarwal, heading for the changing rooms. Mukesh Choudhary's first ball swung back into Agarwal for a neat clip off the pads for four - but the next delivery, angling across and inviting the drive, wasn't quite there for it and skewed straight to point for an easy catch.

Toss time

CSK will be chasing tonight, after Jadeja won his first toss as captain of the yellow submarine. Chris Jordan making his fourth IPL debut (against one of his former teams) is the one change for them, in for Tushar Deshpande. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have left Jonny Bairstow sitting in the dugout after he completed his quarantine period; two players do come in, both IPL debutants in Vaibhav Arora and Jitesh Sharma. Spinner Harpreet Brar and allrounder Raj Bawa sit this one out.

Kings-on-Kings action

Hello and welcome to the live report for tonight's right regnal dust-up. IPL 2022 is into its second week, and already some trends are starting to emerge – although two wins for defending teams yesterday might just temper the dew factor talk a touch. Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings find themselves in the unusual – in fact, unheard of – position of having lost their opening two games, both times batting first, and MS Dhoni Ravindra Jadeja will want that situation rectifying pronto. Their opponents, Punjab Kings, are 1-1 from two, having pulled off a big chase thanks to some lower order hitting, then crumbled looking to set a target second time out. There could be changes on both sides, with the first pinpricks of pressure adding to the evening humidity in Mumbai.
