New South Wales 3 for 124 (Hughes 60, Henriques 41*, Mennie 2-14) v South Australia
A patient half-century from Daniel Hughes gave New South Wales a solid first-innings platform against South Australia on a rain-affected first day at the Adelaide Oval.
Persistent morning and early afternoon rain meant the players had to wait close to four hours before play began.
Hughes then blunted the Redbacks attack, after the Blues were sent in to bat by South Australia's stand-in captain Jake Lehmann. He lost opening partner Nick Larkin early, who fell lbw to Nick Winter. Kurtis Patterson made a start before falling to Joe Mennie for 17.
Hughes faced 162 balls for his 60 with just four boundaries before Mennie also trapped him in front, on what turned out to be the last ball of the day. Mennie finished with 2 for 14 from his 10 overs.
Moises Henriques made a brisk 41 not out and will be greeted at the crease by debutant Jack Edwards at the start of day two. Edwards was one of three debutants who received their first New South Wales cap, alongside Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams.
Former Test and South Australia leg-spinner Peter McIntyre presented Australia Under-19 leg-spinner Lloyd Pope his first Redbacks cap prior to play. Pope bowled six overs for 26 on his first day of Shield cricket.
