Sri Lanka's selectors have picked a 14-man squad for an unofficial tri-series with India and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi from May 1 to 3, according to the Daily News. The tournament is being held to inaugurate the new Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka's quartet of county cricketers - Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas and Upul Chandana - had not been called up, leaving room for a handful of the A-squad players who performed well in recent tours against England and Pakistan.
Michael Vandort was given a look-in after a long absence from the international scene. Shantha Kalavitigoda remained after his selection for the New Zealand tour. Suraj Mohamed, an offspinner, was picked as a spin partner to Malinga Bandara and Gayan Wijekoon was called up as an allrounder.
The only surprise exclusion was Dilhara Fernando, Sri Lanka's quickest bowler, who had battled his way back to full fitness and good form. Lasith Malinga, Ruchira Perera and Nandika Ranjith were the three frontline pace bowlers included in a squad that was packed with eight batsmen.
The players will sign tour contracts with the interim committee this week.
