Bajan trio knew spin would do the trick

Nearly everyone watching the Windward Islands' rapid collapse yesterday would have been surprised.

But that was not the case of the man who caused the mayhem, his captain or his manager.

The Windwards, who had a first innings deficit of 78, embarrassingly collapsed for 83, the last seven wickets falling for 14 runs in just under half-hour.

Left-arm back-of-the-hand spinner Jedson Yarde triggered the downfall with a career-best return of seven for 25.

"The way the guys batted in the first innings, I had an idea of what to bowl in this innings," Yarde said, while admitting that it was the best he had ever bowled in his short career.

Manager Darnley Boxill said: "If you look at the history of the Barbados-Windward Islands encounters, even at the senior level, they seem to fall against the spin.

"Once the spin is pitching, they tend to go very quickly. Very seldom do they put up resistance for a length of time."

Captain Ryan Hinds said: "Cricket is full of surprises, but the way Yarde bowled in the first innings, I thought we could have done it in two days."
