Barbados: Miller snaps up five wickets
Ezra Stuart
St Catherine 168 for 8 v Pickwick
A Five-wicket haul by E.S.A. Field Pickwick's experienced
off-spinner Wren Miller restricted the scoring of BNB St
Catherine on a pedestrian day of fluctuating fortunes yesterday.
Miller captured five for 62 in 24 overs after St Catherine, who
won the toss and batted on an easy-paced pitch in sunny
conditions, were given an encouraging opening stand of 53 in 62
minutes between Ryle Stuart, who made an attacking 46 and Jason
Jordan.
Athletic fast bowler Kelso Odaine gave Miller admirable support,
finishing with two for 40 off 18 overs, 11 of which were
delivered on the trot before tea.
Odaine broke the opening partnership when he trapped Jordan leg
before wicket and also despatched Sean Sargeant in identical
fashion with a delivery which kept low.
Stuart, who struck eight fours in his 67-minute knock off 57
balls, was the first of Miller's victims, caught by
wicket-keeper Rondell Yearwood, pushing forward tentatively.
Miller replaced new ball bowler Gregory Simmons after the
medium-pacer was hoisted for three consecutive fours by Stuart,
in an over which yielded 20 runs. He also accounted for Errol
Watson and wicket-keeper Patrick Browne as the visitors slumped
to 83 for five at tea.
After the interval, veteran Thelston Payne, with a patient 20 in
202 minutes and the muscular Terry Watson (39) featured in a
vital sixth-wicket stand of 55 to revive the innings.
But Miller, a former St Catherine player, induced Payne to cut a
short delivery to Hendy Hinds in the gully and removed Dayne
Maynard (13) when he top-edged a sweep shot to Yearwood.
Mike Matthews chipped in with the wicket of Watson, who was
bowled just before the close.
