Young Barbadian fast bowler Corey Collymore is expected to be named in the West Indies team today for the five-Test tour of England from May 2 to September 4. Reports last night on CBC television and Voice of Barbados radio indicated that the 22- year-old fast bowler and Trinidadian batsman Daren Ganga will be in the 16-member squad which is to be announced at a televised Press conference at Sherbourne Conference Centre.
His return would allow him to resume his Test career which started when he made his Test debut against Australia last year.
The 22-year-old speedster, who broke down with a serious back injury at the DMC tournament in Canada last September and was sidelined for eight months, has been included in the West Indies 'A' team in a four-day match against Pakistan at Kensington Oval, starting tomorrow.
His recovery has been under the watchful eye of former Barbados wicket-keeper Darnley Boxill. Nationsports reported last week that the pacer has been putting in 18 overs a day for the past eight weeks and has remodelled his action so as to put less pressure on his back. He is now more chest-on but still has a high action, generating pace, bounce and movement.
Ganga, 21, is a highly-thought of right-hander but has not played a Test since the ill-fated tour of South Africa in 1998-99, but is expected to win favour with the selectors ahead of Antiguan Sylvester Joseph and Ricardo Powell.
The 'A' team is being led by wicket-keeper Browne, who has made 13 Test appearances for the West Indies, and is joined by Collymore, Ganga, Powell, Mervyn Dillon, and Pedro Collins as other players in the 13-man squad with Test experience.
Test team to England: Jimmy Adams (captain), Sherwin Campbell, Adrian Griffith, Wavell Hinds, Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ridley Jacobs, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Daren Ganga, Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose, Reon King, Nixon McLean, Franklyn Rose, Corey Collymore, Mahendra Nagamootoo.
