JOHANNESBURG, Reuters - South African pace bowler Allan Donald has decided
to continue his Test career by signing a two-year contract with the United
Cricket Board today.
Donald, 33, last played Test cricket for South Africa in the fourth Test
against England in Cape Town over eight months ago.
He admitted then that he was in two minds over the future of his
international career.
"I had to take a break from international cricket and it was the right thing
to do," Donald, who has since played for English county side Warwickshire,
said today.
"I discussed it with my wife and family and I feel I want to resume my
international career."
Donald's new contract expires at the end of April 2002, but the holder of
297 Test wickets said he would like to feature in the 2003 World Cup in
South Africa.
"I've accepted that I only have a two-year contract with the UCB," Donald
said.
"But I've always been a man who sets himself goals, and my immediate goal is
to play in the 2003 World Cup.
"Hopefully I'm fit enough to do so."
Donald will join the South African team when it leaves for the ICC limited
overs tournament in Kenya next week.
He should resume his Test career against New Zealand on November 17 in his
home town of Bloemfontein, a fitting place for him to break the 300 Test
wickets barrier.
"I'm looking forward to that. I still think I can bowl quick for at least
two more years, and I just want to focus on playing for South Africa now,"
he said.
Ali Bacher, managing director of the UCB, said he was delighted with
Donald's decision.
"Allan has always had a tremendous passion and commitment towards the game
of cricket, and we are delighted that he has decided to commit himself to
South African cricket again," Bacher said.
