Galle International Cricket Stadium Re-Construction Work

Subsequent to the Tsunami devastation in December 2004, SLC commenced re-construction work of the Galle International Cricket Stadium, at 8.30 a.m. on Monday 08th May 2006, with the laying of the Foundation Stone.

The Chief Guest was Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Hon. Jeewan Kuamranatunga, while the Guests of Honour were Minister of Vocational Training Mr. Piyasena Gamage, Chief Minister Southern Province - Mr. Shan Vijaya de Silva, Deputy Minister Power & Energy - Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket - Mr. Jayantha Dharmadasa.

The Minister of Sports said that the aim is to build a complete Cricket ground in each district . He further said that the objective of SLC is to improve the talents of Cricketers in various districts and to achieve this end, we should develop the infrastructure facilities. Already a project has been commissioned to construct a Cricket ground with the necessary facilities in each District.

Galle International Cricket Stadium re-construction programme is being coordinated by Mr. Jayananda Warnaweera, Director - Galle International Cricket Stadium and Secretary to Southern Province Cricket Association.
