WP regained the MTN Challenge trophy with a convincing 77 run victory over arch rivals Boland in Hermanus on Friday.
Boland could not match the WP total of 236/3 after a massive 197 second wicket partnership between Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis. WP captain HD Ackerman won the toss and elected to bat. Herschelle Gibbs (118) and Jacques Kallis (78) went on a run spree as Western Province totalled 236/3 after 45 overs.
Gibbs was in devastating form scoring his runs off 148 balls in 157 minutes. His innings included sixteen fours and three sixes. Kallis scored his runs off 103 balls in 134 minutes and his innings included five fours and four sixes. The pair added 197 runs in 134 minutes for the second wicket.
After the early loss of captain Louis Koen Boland never recovered and at the end the day were convincingly outplayed finally reaching 169/9 after 45 overs. Only Steve Palframan 47 not out and Jonathan Trott 34 offered any resistence. Best WP bowler was Roger Telemachus taking 3/26 in nine overs
