At a time when more money is about to flow into the English game through
new
television rights, and innovations are starting to appear including
day/night matches, ODI triseries and restructured domestic games, Essex
County Cricket Club are examining a proposal to build a new multi-million
pound stadium to lure international games to the county.
Plans have been discussed which would see Essex CCC move to a larger site
early next century as a part of the planned Greater Beaulieu Park
development at Boreham. Grandstand and seating accommodation for about
15000
people, the introduction of floodlit matches and a cricket academy are
part
of the vision which aims to concentrate other Essex sporting activities at
Beaulieu.
Essex CCC have based their home at the County Ground, Chelmsford for the
past 73 years, but nearby Chelmsford City FC are already set to move to
the
new complex. The current county ground at Chelmsford has a capacity of
5500, and full houses are rare. Unlike several other counties, Essex are
yet to host any day/night fixtures.
Last week, the Yorkshire CCC finally rejected a proposed move away from
Headingley to a new complex at Wakefield.
