MCC members approved plans for an £8.2million refurbishment of the Lord's pavilion at the club's annual general meeting yesterday.

The plans include the redecoration of the Long Room (including restoration of original ceiling mouldings and two fireplaces), the construction of a new roof terrace, and the reopening of the two pavilion turrets. Behind the scenes, there will be major work to rooms used by players, umpires and physiotherapists, as well as a complete overhaul of the service infrastructure.

"It's really the first top-to-bottom, comprehensive refurbishment in the building's 114-year history," said Iain Wilton, an MCC spokesman. "In several respects the pavilion will be going back more to how it originally looked."

The work will start in September and it is expected that it will be completed by the start of the 2005 season.
