Middlesex 9 for 0 (Strauss 6*, Hutton 2*) trail Hampshire 275 (Crawley 84, Brown 51, Richardson 4-53, Styris 4-45) by 266 runs
Scorecard
Alan Richardson and Scott Styris each took four wickets to dismiss Hampshire for 275 at the Rose Bowl. Richardson struck early, removing James Adams for 5 to hand Middlesex an early advantage, but a second-wicket stand of 78 between Michael Brown (51) and Simon Katich (27) lifted Hampshire and John Crawley added 84 - before hitting his own stumps in disgust when he fell - to ensure it was ultimately the batsmen's day. Although not for Kevin Pietersen. His wretched start to the domestic season continued - his half-century in the one-day format notwithstanding - when Owais Shah snapped him up off Styris before he had scored.
Nottinghamshire 204 for 2 (Bicknell 91, Gallian 83*, Fleming 17*) trail Surrey 217 (Ealham 4-53) by 15 runs with eight wickets remaining
Scorecard
At The Oval, Mark Ramprakash's duck was a surprise for a different reason: it was his first failure after a prolific start to the season in which he has deposited 327 in his first three innings. But Nottinghamshire's batsmen had no such problems and helped their team to end the day well in control, rattling up 204 for the loss of just two wickets in reply to Surrey's 217. Mark Ealham starred for the visitors with the ball, taking 4 for 53, while Darren Bicknell (91) and Jason Gallian (83 not out) were their batting stars. James Benning topscored for Surrey with 56 and Scott Newman made 44. Graham Thorpe made only 9 before sending a lazy dab to second slip, where Rikki Clarke (14) was also caught, a stunning one-handed catch - both fell to Ealham.
Gloucestershire 439 for 8 (Taylor 176, Spearman 73, Ali 55, Fisher 5*) v Glamorgan
Scorecard
Chris Taylor took charge at Sophia Gardens, his 176 helping Gloucestershire to flay Glamorgan's bowling and rattle up 439 for 8 by the close on the first day. The visitors motored along at a free-scoring four an over - with Taylor himself scoring at just shy of a run a ball. His 176 came from just 185 balls and included 22 fours and four sixes. His reign was eventually brought to a close when he was bowled by England hopeful Alex Wharf, whose two wickets cost 116. Phil Weston (29) and Craig Spearman (73) had set the tone with an opening stand of 58, broken when Simon Thomas trapped Weston lbw. Kadeer Ali chipped in 55, but there was no doubt who was the star.
