EAST LONDON, South Africa, Jan 15 (AFP) - South African cricketer Makhaya Ntini was charged with rape in the East London Regional Court here Friday, and released on bail.
The fast-bowler, the first black African to represent South Africa at Test level, is alleged to have raped a 21-year-old student at a cricket ground on December 1 last year.
Ntini was released on bail of 5,000 rands (about 800 dollars), police spokeswoman Senior-Superintendent Marinda Mills said.
He will appear in court again on March 24.
The South African cricket side are due to be on tour in New Zealand at that time.
Ntini was selected to represent South Africa on their tour of England last summer.
A loss of form has seen him excluded from the South African team that has destroyed the West Indies during their current tour of South Africa, winning all four of the Test matches played so far.
