The Sports Ministry has finally decided to hold the Annual General meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL). The meeting is to be held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium at 10.30 am on June 11th. Nominations for the posts will close on May 23rd at 12 noon.
The last BCCSL elections were held in March 1999 but ended up in the law courts when the elected President, Thilanga Sumipithapala, was alleged to have been involved in election malpractice's. Since then, an Interim Committee appointed by the Sports Minister has been running the day to day affairs of the Cricket Board.
The elections were then to be held in March, but were postponed at the last minute by a Ministry ruling to allow auditors to scrutinise the controversial accounts statement of the previous Board administration, headed by Thilanga Sumathipala.
Thilanga Sumathipala, and other officials from the previous Board, subsequently aired their views on the accounts statement when they met a three member Committee appointed by Minister S.B. Dissanayake on April 1st. It now appears that they have been cleared from the charges of financial mismanagement during their term in office.
Thilanga Sumipthipala and Jayantha Dharmadasa, the brother of former Board president Upali, are both expected to forward their nominations.
