Ed Cowan led a steady Tasmania batting performance before New South Wales lost two early wickets on the first day of the Sheffield Shield match in Hobart. Cowan made 76 in the Tasmania total of 276 and at stumps, New South Wales were 2 for 23 with Kurtis Patterson on 7 and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon on 2, after openers Ryan Carters and Scott Henry fell cheaply.
Tasmania's stand-in captain Alex Doolan won the toss and chose to bat but things started shakily when Jordan Silk was caught behind off Doug Bollinger for 1 and Doolan was run out for a duck, leaving the score at 2 for 10. But Cowan calmed the Tigers and put together a 105-run partnership with Dom Michael that ended when Cowan was caught at gully off Sean Abbott for 76.
Jon Wells and Michael fell with no further addition to the total, but from 5 for 115 Tasmania were able to work their way back into the contest through a series of lower-order stands. Ben Hilfenhaus struck eight boundaries during an important innings of 52, Clive Rose made 45 and Luke Butterworth scored 31.
