Slapped over the bowler, and, we. are. done! Length on fourth, Dwarshuis' open stance worked this time as Sutherland continued to angle it away. Swooshed it with a horizontal swipe
Renegades vs Sixers, 2nd Match at Sydney, BBL, Dec 16 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Sixers won by 5 wickets (with 9 balls remaining)
That was a fun game. Perhaps an expected result but much more closely contested than it seems by a look at the scorecard. Hopefully, they are signs of promise heading into a new season.
Moises Henriques, POTM and Sydney Sixers captain: We've had a lot of success but the first game is often nerve-wracking. Glad we bowled well. Balls flew over the keeper early. Thought they were 10-15 overs, but glad we got through. I was trying to play it down in the Surge as we needed 34 off 24 and I took it, watched the ball hard and hit it hard, but tough gig for Zorba with the short boundary. To bowl spin in the Surge is tough, even for a world-class spinner, but there wasn't much hold in the wicket. (Abbott and Dwarshuis) They went at 8 and 9 an over but bowled tough overs, so I felt the boys bowled better than what his figures suggest.
10:35pm: Three sixes and two fours in the last two overs and Sixers are home with nine balls to spare. They were often at par with the asking rate but, like Gades earlier in the day, lose wickets in a cluster, thanks to Sutherland. But the set up by Vince and Edwards was solid, and the pitch eased over time. The running, especially from Moises, was impeccable. They got ones and twos, with the odd boundary, got eights and tens effortlessly off an over. They got the Surge, and Dwarshuis - who came in after Hayden Kerr was retired hurt - got a couple away, ensuring Sixers were indeed a few short.
Angles it away this time. Length on fifth, batter was open and wanted to go leg side. Way too late on the cut
That's hit the hull of the roof!. The sound on it could not be purer! Game could be over in a ball now! In the batter's half and it was clubbed with the freest of swings. Sailed over wide long-on. 108 metres
Drives the full ball outside off straight to cover
Slow again and Moises has so much time to make room and cut the length from good to full. Inside-out drive awwayyy over long-off. Fifty up at just over two a ball. Sixers now in command
Almost a stunning one-hander from Richardson, running to the right from mid-off. He couldn't run towards it at full pace to ensure he didn't lose vision, but the reach wasn't enough in the end. Went with his right hand, clasped at the ball, squeezed it onto the ground. Was a loopy length ball down leg of which Dwarshuis tried to get inside the line off, tried clobbering it over cow corner.
Flatter length ball on fourth, chopped to backward point
Dinked away through wide mid-on and the gap-picking allows two
That's a monstrous six. What tier was that? Close to the second but still first. 96 metres though, so not a short boundary by any means. Was a length ball that was looped up, one that Moises turned into a half-volley by charging down. It was an on-drive
Zampa back now
Nick: "Picked up on Fox Cricket - Zampa was originally set to bowl that first surge over, but once Dwarshuis walked out, took his hat back off the umpire and has left the field again" Thanks
Slowish slot ball, 129ks, is driven like it's off a spinner. Gets it to the right of mid-off, who is able to stop it with a slide
Full ball, pace-on, chipped over the bowler. Long-on goes across and cuts it off
Slower one is wide and the shortish ball is slapped over cover. Richardson probably betting on Moises making room. Doesn't work
Full on middle, tries to make room and drives. Finds mid-off
Chops it behind point. Two deep fielders there, point gets there and pulls the ball back close to the ropes. Collision was on the cards but deep point went diagonal and over the boundary
It's shortish but slow and wide. Angling away. Dwarshuis wants to pull it across leg side, misses
Death overs will also commence the Power Surge. Offcutter, on a length, away from the bat swing, up in the air, is Evans' prediction
Hayden Kerr held his left hamstring going for the second last ball. He's getting medical attention now. On-air comms mentioning Kerr might be done, that Moises might've signalled a lhb to come in. But there are leg stretches going on. Dwarshuis padded up. Oh wow, Kerr is walking back. Gades' fielders go to the ump and ask if that was a tactical choice. But there was a replay suggesting Kerr was ginger. Evans, who's on the mic, also feels it wasn't
Length in the channel, stirred to long-on. Good finish from Rogers but Sixers milked things nicely that over after getting the boundary
Plops the length ball over the bowler with a semi-horizontal bat. Gets it to long-on
Chopped to deep third. 136ks length ball on fourth, not enough room for the cut but goes through with it. Underedged
Midge: "This has got Super Over written all over it, then the Gades will make a hash of it!"
Length on fifth, stabs it with the cross bat. Underedge takes it towards point
Pulls the shortish ball to deep square leg
