full, sliced and it clears short third... oh dear, it's then misfielded to the boundary by Jonas! She was scrambling to keep up running back, seemed to get there but could only help the ball on to the rope. England win by six wickets, they take the T20I series with two games to play and extend their shutout of the tourists
NZ Women vs ENG Women, 3rd T20I at Canterbury, ENG v NZ (W), Jul 11 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
ENG Women won by 6 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)
9.43pm: Time for the presentations in Canterbury. Alice Capsey is Player of the Match: "We got a good start in the powerplay, got a bit tight... the way Kemp finished in the second-to-last over was outstanding. Nice to get over the line. Best of both worlds, loving batting at No. 3"
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine: "We had a bit of fight, bit of ticker. Really proud of this team, been a tough tour. Weren't good enough in the field but proud of how the girls fought back. [141] We thought it was par, not my natural game to go as slowly but we wanted wickets in the shed at the back end, then go hard. [NZ spinners] Look at England's spinners and what they've done, I thought our spinners were excellent. It's about learning and adjusting on the go. I'd like a win but this is international cricket, it's tough. We're getting closer."
England's stand-in skip Nat Sciver-Brunt: "I felt pretty out [on not reviewing lbw]. It was good, with the bowling attack we've got, it's a pretty easy job. Happy I could keep the winning streak going. Would have liked more out of myself. [Kemp] We've had some long batting, the calmness that they showed was brilliant. [Young players] Putting ourselves under pressure, we don't want to do that too often - but to come out the other side, learn from it, and take it to Bangladesh, perfect."
Right, that's that for tonight. There are two more T20Is to come, two more chances for NZ to get on the board. Join us again from The Oval on Saturday. Cheerio!
9.38pm: Well, England "put themselves under pressure", in Sophie Ecclestone's words, but came through in a tight chase - though it has to be said, NZ's fielding helped them out a fair bit. Nat Sciver-Brunt made a golden duck standing in as captain (though would have been saved by a review), and Sophie Devine's side came as close as they have to victory on tour. But Alice Capsey's best T20I score of 67 not out from 60 balls anchored England, while another young gun in Freya Kemp helped nail the target with a handful of balls to spare. Phew!
slower ball, goes for the big heave-ho to leg... skews off the toe of the bat into the cover and Kemp ends up diving desperately for the line at the non-striker's end
Devine to bowl, England want five to win
Kemp the matchwinner? England will feel comfortable needing less than a run a ball
jabbed into the covers, well stopped but they'll get one
skips down and smokes this straight! Back-to-back boundaries - the first Kasperek has conceded - push England into the box seat again. Hammered fine of long-off by Kemp
reverse-slapped past short third! Cool from Kemp, who extends her long levers through a powerful swipe for four!
full and straight from round the wicket, Kemp loses it into the leg side
hacked down the ground, another one dropped! Green was diving at full stretch, couldn't hold on but managed to prevent it going for four
Here's Mark: "Now if Capsey had been run out on 8, how different this may have looked. NZ's fielding, among other things, have let them down this tour."
looped up on the stumps, paddled for one
Still in the balance here. England need 17 from 12, Kasperek to bowl the 19th
driven back to the bowler, Kerr grabs it one-handed on the bounce and saves one!
round the wicket, dragged down and Kemp slams a pull through square leg! Seemed to come off the toe end of the bat but she got enough power on it to beat the sweeper
drops short, swung away through leg
Freya Kemp is the finisher at No. 6. Can she finish this?
plinked to mid-off, Jones was looking for one, she won't get back to the bowler's end! Capsey seemed to come for the single and then change her mind, Devine fired the ball in to Kerr, who kept her cool to break the stumps with Jones well short
skips down and plants this over long-on! The crowd comes to life with that shot. A sweet, sweet connection just when England needed it!
tossed up and chipped to mid-off... Devine drops it! The captain of all people, she was turning side on and the ball burst through her hands
Kerr for her fourth
Pretty much 10s now for England, who haven't hit a boundary since the 13th over
pace off wide of the stumps again, Capsey looks to ramp but can't get it away
crunched through the covers but Halliday and Plimmer do well to save a coupleat deep extra cover
another slower ball, Jones hoicks it into the air, lands safely on the leg side for another single
another cutter wide of the stumps and Capsey plinks it in front of cover
pace off, 58mph outside off. Driven back through the bowler, Devine unable to get her hand down
full and wide, slapped out to deep cover
Devine is back, Gaze up to the stumps. This could be the key over, 35 needed from 24
