cleaned up with the wrong 'un! West Indies' fun is over, and England have wrapped up a commanding win by 238 runs. Absolute domination at Edgbaston to get the new white-ball era underway... just like in 2015, albeit against much weaker opposition!
England vs West Indies, 1st ODI at Birmingham, ENG vs WI, May 29 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
7.59pm: That's all for tonight, folks. Make sure to catch Vithushan Ehantharajah's report from Edgbaston, which should be updated here shortly, and we'll see you all again on Sunday for the second game in Cardiff. Until then, on behalf of Chetan and Miller, this is Matt signing off.
Harry Brook is all smiles after a big win. "That was a pretty phenomenal performance from the boys," he says. "[Approach?] The same thing I've been saying to the press: put their best balls under pressure, score big runs... [Collective effort today?] Not concerning, because we got 400! That's something we can look at. There were four of us who got 50-plus and if one of us kicks on, that's a complete performance. [Smith and Jacks roles?] We've got so much power. Smudge started really well, put them under an immense amount of pressure. That allowed people down the order to be able to try and hit it out of the park. [Bowling - aggression and discipline?] A lot of energy on the ball. [Saqib] bowled beautifully in the Powerplay. Carsey and Jamie O were bowling gas. [Five catches?] They were going in alright! Nice to get the series underway in good fashion."
Shai Hope gives his reaction. "We didn't get the early inroads we were after, especially with the new ball... if you don't take wickets, you're going to find yourself playing catch-up. [Plans towards the end?] You've got to back your skills. We actually pulled the game back quite nicely with Justin and Motie, who controlled the middle. But we let it slip at the back end when we were trying to get them under 350. We've got some work to do. [Death bowling?] It's more down to the execution. Our skillset is there. It's about executing when it really matters. We've got some very inexperienced bowlers so it's only a matter of time. [Batting struggle?] We have the quality. We've shown that over the last couple of months. 400 is a tough task. We didn't start well in the Powerplay either with the bat and were playing catch-up. You need a very good start and couldn't get one."
Jacob Bethell is Player of the Match at his home ground, for his innings of 82 (and a wicket!). "It's pretty special to play for the first time here for England and to top it off with a win like that. [No. 6] I enjoy batting in the middle order. Today was a pretty easy situation to come into. We were well on top when I walked out... saw it through with Jos and managed to build a great thing with Jacksy. [Gameplan?] When I'm in, I can hit a lot of balls to the boundary so I'm not too fussed about taking a few balls at the start. [IPL experience?] I learned a lot. I found that experience very beneficial. I feel a better player than I was two months ago... Virat was great! Being a part of that tournament was pretty special."
7.42pm: England's second-biggest win in men's ODIs by runs, second only to a 242-run win over Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018. They reached exactly 400 thanks to half-centuries from Duckett, Root and Brook, and a sparkling 82 from Bethell on his home ground, and then made light work of West Indies' batting order, with Mahmood and Overton the main threats - and Brook taking five catches in the field. England lead 1-0, heading into Sunday's second ODI at Cardiff. Hang around for some reaction.
Sampath Bandarupalli: Jayden Seales is just the seventh No. 11 batter to be the top-scorer in a men's ODI innings.
googly, worked around the corner to leg slip on the half-volley. Might just have been thigh pad rather than inside edge
This is like watching England's Test team bowl to the tail... The partnership is worth 38 in 25 balls, which makes it the biggest of this West Indies innings!
full and straight, sliding into the pad. Ambitious appeal, but pitched outside leg
strays down the leg side, flicks the pad on its way through
And there goes England's record win!
short ball, dragged away through the vacant mid-on for four more. Easy pickings!
full on the pads, chipped out to square leg
short ball, worked around the corner past leg gully
banged in from around the wicket, inside-edged into the body as it dribbles away into the off side
Carse replaces Overton.
lunch: "A couple dozen more of these from Seales and it's game on!"
googly, half-baked appeal for lbw as the ball then loops up to slip. England are out of reviews, but this looked optimistic
googly, slapped out to deep point on the cut
Seales has doubled his career tally in ODIs!
full on the pads, and slapped hockey-style through square leg! Rashid is taking some serious tap
looped up, slower and wider... but the result is the same! Seales is getting some range-hitting practice. Clears the front leg, and sends it into the stands
smeared over wide long-on! Too full and floaty from Rashid. Muscled over the leg side
half-hearted caught-behind appeal as Rashid's wrong 'un beats Seales' outside edge
another bumper, Joseph looks to pull but can't lay bat on it
short ball, bobs down below it
short ball, pulled hard behind square
whipped through mid-on. There were three catchers lined up at short midwicket, but Joseph rolled the wrists and went straighter
short ball, ducks underneath it
banged in halfway down, punched to cover
