Zimbabwe have won it! Who would have thought this result was possible when they were struggling so badly at the start of the game and with all those ducks in their scorecard? They managed to crawl past 100 and what a comeback in the second half. What a deliciously bizarre game this has been. btw .. this final delivery, a very full one, was pushed out by Rampaul. West Indies were brutally exposed by the spinners here. Quite an amazing turnaround.
West Indies vs Zimbabwe, Only T20I at Port of Spain, Feb 28 2010 - Match Result
Chigumbura and Masakadza's 6-run partnership is ZIM's highest for the 8th wicket in T20Is, breaking the record of 2 between Gary Brent and Utseya
Chigumbura has broken the record for playing the most T20Is (8) for ZIM, going past Chibhabha
Yes, the pitch offered spin, yes it was a two-paced track, with the ball occasionally stopping on the batsmen, but it has be said that the batsmen showed poor skills. West Indies were terrible against spin today and crumbled under steady pressure exerted by the gang of Zimbabwe spinners. What a superb win this for the visitors. Awesomeo!
The whole game followed a strange script: Zimbabwe struggled and stuttered initially but they managed to limp past 100. Then the infamous calypso collapso began. Game over.
Hold on for quotes from post-match ceremony.
Ramdin "Very disappointing. We needed to show more application, the batsmen had to stay there but no one did. They bowled well in the right areas and got the results. We were quite happy way we bowled but the batting ... Hopefully Chris Gayle will come back and we can bounce back from this."
Utseya : "It wasn't a great start but we managed to put a total and the guys struck it out there. It wasn't a easy to bat on .. we thought 140 was a good total there but it obviously wasn't! The wicket was spinner friendly and so we decided to make use of all our spinners. The guys have been playing some good cricket back home. Even though we have won this first game but its important for us to keep improving and not get ahead."
Man of the Match is Cremer: "I am happy I got a spinning wicket for a change. We knew that this would be low and slow but we didn't think it would spin this much. We saw the track yesterday and felt that it would turn. Every one is pretty confident; we need to iron out few things. we have worked hard in domestic cricket and it should be a good series."
That's it from us. Thanks for logging on.
leans forward to swat it away to deep midwicket. Final delivery coming up.
yorker arrives now, squeezed out to point
low full toss on the leg stump line, Ramdin goes for the swing across the line and edges it to third man
short in length, swatted away to the on side
sprays this one down the off side
Dropped at long-on Ramdin heaved the full delivery straight to long-on where the fielder clangs it.
Paul: "I don't know whats happening to West Indies cricket...Am just happy for Zimbabwe"
moves outside leg, drives to long-o n .. just a single ... 33 runs needed in the last over. Oh well ...
reaches out to stab the full delivery for a single ...
full and outside off, the batsman can't get bat on ball.
really full delivery, mistimes the drive to long-on
short of length outside off stump, Ramdin clears the front foot and plays a flat-bat forehand down the line to the long-off boundary
Slower one from the seamer - it has been all spin so far- ramdin backs away to mistime the flat-batted shot back to the bowler
40 from 12 balls. You would think that's not possible under the circumstances. Let's see what happens.
Shout for stumping and it's refered to third umpire Rampaul goes for the big swing but is beaten by the off break but has some part of his back foot just about inside the line
pretty full in length, tapped back to the bowler! They can't get it off the turf here.
fuller, straighter, driven to the off side
turns away from the off stump, and spins past the outside edge
lobs a gentle full toss, mistimes the swing to deep midwicket
pushes this one back to Taylor
Michael: "Well when this match began I was asking what is wrong with Zim I am still asking that but as a Zimbabwean I am proud Go Zim go (on the edge of my seat)"
Surely, Zimbabwe have sewed this game now? Sammy moves down the track, tries to play for the turn but this one slides back in, goes through the bat and pad gap and hits the stumps. The pitch has turned, yes it has been a touch slow and stopped on the batsmen but the skill levels have been poor.
