Aravinda De Silva will be returning to one-day cricket in the forthcoming
Asia Cup after missing the last two series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
De Silva last played one-day cricket in last Octobers Sharjah Cup final
against Pakistan.
The recall of the 34 four year old batsmen signifies a possible change fo strategy for the 4 Nation Asia Cup. Aravinda is expected to open the batting with Sanath Jayasuriya, bringing to an end the highly successful partnership between Romesh kaluwitherana and Jayasuriya.
Having been selected for the Zimbabwe tour he subsequently pulled out of
the tour to take a rest from international cricket. He was the not selected
for the one-day series in Pakistan in March but made a return to
international cricket in the test series.
The other surprise selection in the 14 man squad is the inclusion of 19
year old Kaushalya Weereratne who has been rewarded for some impressive
performances for Sri Lanka 'A' in their current series against Zimbabwe
'A'. The young fast bowler and useful late order batsmen has only played
three first class matches and his still studying at school. In the recent series against Zimbabwe he took 15 wickets at 17.60 apiece.
Former Sri Lankan Captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, and fast medium bowler, Pramodya Wickremasinghe, were not considered due to injury. Ranatunga is still recovering from his broken thumb sustained in the Pakistan Test series and Wickramasinghe has just returned from Australia, where he underwent an operation on his shoulder.
