Angus Fraser has confirmed his interest in running for the newly opened position of managing director at Middlesex, the club at which he played his entire 18-year career.
"I'm keen to chat with them and find out what they have to say because it's still a place close to my heart," Fraser told BBC London. "I currently have a very good job with the Independent newspaper but there is no harm in listening to what people have to say.
"They've enjoyed success in the Twenty20 Cup this season but there are obviously things to do before we can become a successful county. My association with the county didn't end when I stopped playing cricket. I've been on committees at the club and desperately want to see them do well."
Fraser, who joined the Independent as cricket correspondent after retiring in 2002, is now believed to be the front-runner for the post. Speculation increased after the newspaper severely cut back on its cricket coverage earlier this week.
Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has also been short-listed, though other counties are believed to be courting his services too.
The position's availability comes at a crucial period for Middlesex. In spite of winning the Twenty20 Cup in July, plenty of changes have taken place behind the scenes - not least in regard to Ed Smith, whose leadership style has caused much contention among certain players.
Earlier this week, it was announced Shaun Udal, not Ed Joyce, the interim captain for much of the season, will take over from Smith as captain next season.
