Defending champions Cable & Wireless BET, spurred by an outstanding all-round per-formance from Antonio Mayers, beat in-form Banks in a rain-affected Barbados Fire & Commercial second-round match yesterday. There were also wins for ESA Field Pickwick, ICB Empire, Mount Gay Maple, BNB St. Catherine, United Carlton, Caribbean YMPC and Big B Spartan.
At Wildey: C&W BET (215-6 in 40 overs) beat Banks (190 in 36.1 overs) by 15 runs.
BET edged out their neighbours in a tense finish.
After being set a revised target of 205 in 38 overs when the rains came, Banks were struggling at 148 for eight and required a further 59 runs in five overs.
Banks' fightback was due to Winston Reid's big hitting in a knock of 34.
BET's innings was built around 72 from Ron Bates and an attacking unbeaten 62 of 41 balls from Mayers, who returned with the ball to take four for 30.
At Kensington Oval: Pickwick (179-8 in 40 overs) beat Wanderers (171 in 38.2 overs) by eight runs.
Crucial late innings knocks from oldstagers Clinton St. Hill (40) and Hendy Wallace (29) set up a close victory for Pickwick.
Cockspur Wanderers were always behind the asking rate in spite of a solid half-century from Chris Humphrey.
When he was run out, Wanderers faced the difficult task of scoring another 47 runs from six overs with four wickets in hand.
At Trents: Maple (216-9 in 40 overs) beat Psychiatric Hospital (94 in 33 overs) by 122 runs.
Struggling Division 1 side Maple had a rare good day when they mauled Intermediate team Psychiatric Hospital.
Opener Winslow Harris led Maple's charge, falling one short of a well-deserved 50.
Andy Payne steadied the innings with an unbeaten 43, while Ryan Hurley made 38.
The visitors could not reach three figures after openers Clayton Murray and Ronald Pile gave them a slow start of 29.
At Shorey Village: Empire (215-8 in 40 overs) beat Conrad Hunte SC (182 in 35.3 overs) by 33 runs.
Set up by a century stand between the experienced Roland Holder and Sherlon Greaves, Empire defeated the Shield champs .
Holder stroked the ball well in a run-a-ball 75 and Greaves, batting with an injured hand, made 55 off 66 balls
Carib Conrad Hunte SC, lost two early wickets, but David Nurse (48) Anderson Headley (26) and DaCosta Atherley (24) put the St. Andrew side back in contention.
Pacer Patterson Thompson sealed the issue with three wickets in his second spell to end with four for 22 off eight overs.
At Bayfield: BRC (136 in 36 overs) lost to St. Catherine (137-7 in 37.2 overs) by three wickets.
Intermediate team BRC made St. Catherine struggle on a difficult pitch to make a relatively small total.
But the Division 1 team won with 2.4 overs to spare after an unbroken stand of 33 between captain Roger Blades (15) and Victor Skeete (17).
BRC were restricted on a rain-affected pitch by pacer Brian Shepherd, with four for 14, and leg-spinner Ryan Layne (four for 49).
At Blenheim: Carlton (150 in 38 overs) beat BCL (95 in 35.3 overs) by 55 runs.
After restricting Carlton to a modest total, the BCL fared no better and lost easily.
Barbados youth team captain Jason Parris played a controlled innings of 49 for Carlton. He received some support from Vonrick Nurse (18) and captain Shirley Clarke (19).
BCL found scoring to be very difficult against a bowling attack which was led by Callitos Lopez and Junior Gaskin, whose line and length were tight.
At Beckles Road: YMPC (206 in 39.2 overs) beat Police (163 in 34.2 overs) by 43 runs.
YMPC put on an impressive all-round display to arrest Stansfeld Scott Police.
Guided by a 78-ball knock of 65 by opener Leon Layne, YMPC were off to a rousing start of 57 in only eight overs. Layne's partner, Adrian Jones, provided support with a brisk 20.
Veteran Sylvester Louis was the most successful bowler, capturing five late wickets for 41 runs.
When Police batted, only opener Dwayne Brathwaite, Trevor Griffith and captain Rudolph Clarke batted with any conviction.
YMPC captain William Lashley sustained his fine off-spin bowling with four for 38 to wreck the lawmen.
At Queen's Park: Dover (186 in 38.3 overs) lost to Spartan (189-6 in 39.1 overs) by four wickets.
Captain Philo Wallace and Livy Puckerin paced Spartan to a victory over Piton Dover with five balls to spare.
After Wallace set the foundation with 60 off 69 deliveries, Puckerin added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 48 off 60 balls.
Dover wasted an excellent start as the middle and lower order fell away rapidly.
Peter Clarke smashed two sixes and seven fours in scoring 76, mainly in partnership with Rene Sargeant (30) as the pair put on 99 for the first wicket.
Hattian Graham was the most successful bowler with four for 42.
