Sussex 169 for 9 beat Durham 161 (Muchall 58) by eight runs at Hove
Scorecard
Durham's 20-year-old batsman, Gordon Muchall, scored a chanceless and mature 58 from 112 balls to push Sussex all the way in their floodlit encounter at Hove, but in the end Durham fell nine runs short of victory in a low-scoring match. On a turgid pitch, Sussex batted first and managed a meagre 169, but even that total was a triumph of sorts, as they had slumped to 126 for 8 by the 35th over. Durham quickly realised the scale of their task, as Paul Hutchison and Paul Taylor scalped the top order to leave them teetering at 26 for 5. Philip Mustard, however, took the long-handled route in a 34-ball 32, while Muchall dug in for the long haul. At 103 for 8, Neil Killeen arrived to provide stalwart support in a partnership of 52, but with 15 runs required from 13 balls, Muchall was run out by a direct hit from cover. Killeen then missed a full-toss from Taylor and was trapped lbw with one over remaining.
