Run-out and that's a massive win for the Warriors! Drakes has pushed it to cover and taken off but the throw was quick and the batter well out of his crease when Azam Khan collects the ball and knocks the stumps off. A crushing win for the Warriors, another lame performance from the Patriots.
Amazon vs Patriots, 15th Match at Bridgetown, CPL 2023, Sep 02 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
1.30pm So another convincing win by the marauding Guyana Amazon Warriors who go top of the table. The Patriots stay at the bottom, despite Evin Lewis coming back as captain after Rutherford skippered them in their last game and making five changes. We have more action today with Barbados Royals taking on Trinbago Knight Riders in the WCPL and then the Royals' men's team taking on St Lucia Kings. For this game, that will be all. On behalf of Harshith Gowda and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo, this is Abhimanyu signing off.
Imran Tahir starts off by thanking the supporters. Then he says: "It's very satisfying. I think Dwaine and Shepherd are giving us a very good start. That's a captain's dream. There is always room to improve but I can't see any fault in them. [Batting plans] We just need to be a little aware about losing wickets up front. We keep doing well from No.s 4-8 but I want to see the top order step up a bit and get some runs. [On captaincy] It's a great feeling. I always love a good challenge. It's a new role for me but it's a great team, great boys. Very disciplined."
Evin Lewis: "To be honest we started pretty well with the ball but let them get too many runs at the back end. Basically Dominic has been very good for us that's why I backed him to bowl the last over. The wicket was pretty good. But we didn't get a good start in the powerplay and it put us under pressure. We keep chopping and changing trying to find the right combination but it didn't work out again so hopefully we can do better tomorrow."
1.15pm A 98-run win after looking in trouble at one time shows the depth that Warriors have. Oshane Thomas had them worried for a while, but they dominated the back end with the ball and after conceding 14 runs in the first over, they dominated the entire second innings. Thomas was the only positive for Patriots. They have a lot to ponder about. For the Warriors, Shepherd and Pretorius were good with both bat and ball, and in the field. Motie impressed with the ball. Paul was excellent with bat in hand and Hetmyer played a good cameo. They were excellent in the field overall, with two run-outs to show for that. Warriors are now top of the table! The Warriors players go out to their fans to thank them.
Here's Pretorius, the player of the match: "The guys told me that I'll see the support for the team and it feels unbelievable! [On partnership with Paul] That was tricky. We just wanted to play good cricket shots for the first 2-3 overs and then take them on in the back end. We backed ourselves to get to 170 and I'm glad we got to 184 [186]. I feel in these wickets, if you try to hit the top of the bails with a bit of swing, you can do well. Tahir is always positive. It's good having him as a captain. He backs me quite a bit so it's been cool playing in this environment."
On a length on off, punched out to long-off
Slightly shorter but Drakes can only slap it out to cover
Works this length ball to cover
Thomas takes on a full delivery and goes inside out between deep cover and long-off. Doesn't hit it very cleanly so it lands well short of the fielders
Appeal for lbw as the ball pitches on middle and turns away past the outside edge and hits Thomas on the pads but turned down
Oshane Thomas is the last batter for the Patriots
And now Junior Sinclair has a wicket, thanks to a very good catch from Dwaine Pretorius! Sinclair drags it down and Layne goes for a pull. But it goes in the air and to long-on's right. Pretorius does well to run across and take it low while tumbling over
Fired in full on middle and it again goes off the outer half of the bat to bakcward point
Full and slow on middle, Drakes defends and it comes off the outer half of the bat towards backward point
Layne gets off the mark by driving a full delivery out to long-on
And is beaten on the outside edge first up! Ayub tosses it up on a length outside off, drawing him forward but the ball goes straight with the angle and past the bat
Johann Layne is out to bat on debut
Ayub gets a wicket! Howell looks to take him on and ends up skying it and it's an easy catch at midwicket. Shai Hope has not taken many easier than that. Ayub had tossed it up full around off, Howell went for the slog-sweep and made a mess of it. Ayub brings out a little jig in celebration
Tossed up full on leg, driven out to long-on
103 needed from the last five overs for the Patriots. Saim Ayub introduced to the attack now. More offspin
Gets some width and slaps it out to deep cover
Tossed up very full and very slow around off, driven back to the bowler
Dragged down on a length just outside off, Howell pulls it out to long-on
Hajji49: "Sadly, beating the Patriots does not constitute a "blowout." Always been a team that on paper each season promised much but disappointed often. Really feel for the fans. Regardless of which side you back, you want to see a better fight than this. Imho, overall CPL 2023 feels like it's lacking some of the regular magic and vibe. Still early days though, hopefully ..."
Tossed up full around off and Drakes whips it out to long-on
On a length outside off and he cuts to backward point's left
Length ball pushed defensively to cover
Drakes falls across the stumps as he tries to scoop Motie. But doesn't hit it well at all and it just lobs up towards the square leg area
