Queensland's freshman fast bowler Ben Laughlin tore through New South Wales and ended with 6 for 23 to take his side to a 147-run win in Cairns. A maiden FR Cup century by Lee Carseldine and a half-century from Andrew Symonds propelled Queensland to 6 for 287 before Laughlin led the pace attack to skittle out New South Wales.
Laughlin's figures are the third best in List A matches in Australia - the first two were also set by Queensland fast bowlers. Playing only his second one-day game for the Bulls, Laughlin came late into the attack after James Hopes and Ashley Noffke had strangled the run-rate to a point where New South Wales were scoring at just above one an over.
Laughlin broke the 37-run third-wicket partnership by trapping Steve Smith lbw for 19. In his next over he removed Dominic Thornely and Peter Forrest off successive balls as the Blues collapsed to 5 for 90. When David Warner fell in the next over, New South Wales had lost four wickets for two runs. With Laughlin taking three more wickets in three overs, a New South Wales revival was out of the question.
Carseldine and Symonds had forged such a revival for Queensland after the openers fell with only 15 on the board. The two hit Smith out of the attack, taking 21 runs off his two overs and Carseldine hit him for a six before getting the single to reach his century. Their 187-run partnership equalled the Queensland record set by Jeff Thomas and Stuart Law in 1993-94.
Symonds, who had struggled in his opening state games of the season, played himself into some form with 73 from 94 balls. New South Wales were forced to field a weakened bowling attack after Nathan Bracken, Moises Henriques and Mark Cameron were ruled out through injury. Burt Cockley, who got to make his debut instead, picked up 1 for 59.
