a yorker comes off the pad and runs down towards long leg, Malinga holds his nerve and pulls it off for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 13th Match, Group 1 at Kandy, Sep 27 2012 - Match Result
So what a game we have had, with Sri Lanka winning it in a Super Over after the match was tied. It was just what the designers had in mind when they conjured up T20, a great hard, fast surface, big hitting, boundaries aplenty, the tightest of finishes and then a bit of extra drama to finally separate these sides. Tillakaratne Dilshan took the Man of the Match award for his innings that should have taken Sri Lanka over the line, he couldn't quite finish it off but his side prevailed in the end.
But no time to catch our breath because we're straight off to live coverage of the second game of the night, England playing West Indies. Phew, see you tomorrow...
tries to find the stands over long off, it was well struck down to the boundary and it was superbly taken by Dilshan right on the edge of the rope, great catch, so nearly a big hit from Guptill. Still 8 required, Taylor the new batsman with McCullum on strike...
Sangakkara drops a thick egde from McCullum, again it was wide and tried to be swung away. 8 to win...
full and wide of McCullum's swing outside off, Sangakkara lets it through his hands and they scramble a couple of bonus runs. NZ need 9 to win...
full ball again, chopped to midwicket Guptill trying to swing it over the on side
Guptill swings at a wide delivery and gets a wild outside edge over backward point, the cover sweeper comes around to field
Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill have found some gear and are coming out to face Lasith Malinga...
New Zealand need 14 to win if it's another tie, it will go to boundary countback over the entire duration of the match, so including the Super Over...there's delay while New Zealand retrieve their kit, it may be back on the bus! There's another game to come remember on this ground...
full again, Perera goes for the paddle sweep, meets it on the full and gets it just over short long leg, they take three out to the boundary. Finish on 13 for 1...
another excellent full ball onto leg stump, comes off the pad of Dilshan into the covers and they take a quick single
Dilshan is the new batsman, if Sri Lanka lose another wicket the innings is over
full again, dug out into midwicket, coming back for the second, run out very easily, a good return by the deep fielder.
full outside off again, a swing and a miss by Perera, they take an extra to the keeper too
full ball dug out down the ground by Perera, great running and they get back for the second
full outside off but this is too wide of the left-handed Perera and called wide
full again outside leg, step to give himself room, dug out into the covers by Jayawardene
full ball dug out by Jayawardene, plenty of bat on this, long leg slides and saves four very well
So a wait to find out which three batsman are going to be nominated for Sri Lanka and, of course, which bowler is going to send down the six deliveries...Jayawardene and Perera are going to bat, Dilshan has also got his gear on in the dugout...Tim Southee looks like he's going to bowl...
What drama! Everything we've been waiting for in this tournament has suddenly come alive tonight, fabulous, crazy cricket...so now we have a Super Over, and the rules are...Sri Lanka to bat first because they were the chasing team...one over each, two wickets per team...
slap into the off side off an inside edge, easy run out at point surely to the non-striker's end but I think Taylor dropped the ball, he did! Taylor dropped it and Sri Lanka have won!! But no!! On the replay the ball has deflected off Taylor's hand and deflected into the stumps!!! Amazing stuff so New Zealand have effected the run out and this is going to be a Super Over...so much checking to see what actually caused the bails to come off but it looks as if it was ball...here comes the third umpire...it's OUT!!!
So now just a single to win it...surely the field comes right up...run whatever...
full and wide, goes for the ramp and this time pulls it off! What a shot, picked it up from well outside off and it sails over short long leg
Five from two...
full and wide enough of the attempted drive, beats the bat, dot ball!
Five from three balls...
full ball on leg stump, dug out through midwicket for...just a single as the fielder scrambles well off the rope
Six to win...
full outside off, goes for the ramp and gets it off the toe of the bat in the air towards short long leg, doesn't get it at all and it falls short of the fielder
Seven to win from five balls...
full and cracked out to cover, well fielded
So eight to win and Southee again to bowl around the wicket...
slower ball on off stump and Perera swings and loses his off stump. Franklin atoning slightly, bowling a great slower ball on a good length, Perera took a huge swipe at it and lost his off stump
full and wide, swung away off an outside edge, third man is up and that will run away for four, poor ball, giving the batsman the chance to free his arms
full outside off, dug out down the ground again, Franklin nearly fielded it but couldn't hold it, another single to long on
outside off, slugged down the ground to long on from a length
So no Dilshan to finish it off, new batsman now have to get Sri Lanka over the line...
cut out to the deep fielder at cover, Southee returns well, and Dilshan is diving in coming back for the second and is short of his ground he was desperate to come back and keep the strike but a great piece of work on the cover boundary again gives New Zealand hope
Terrible delivery and that wins the game surely...
full toss just outside off and smashed over midwicket into the crowd
Well, well, from a blazing start, Sri Lanka have work to do...i'm still backing them though...Franklin to bowl, he did it against India recently...
a terrific over from Southee, Dilshan plays the final blockhole delivery towards long on
once again Southee finds the blockhole and gives Mathews no room, the batsman hits towards long on
nearly in the blockhole around off and middle, driven from the crease through cover point
Taylor having a chat with his bowler ...
Dilshan makes room by moving outside leg, Southee cramps him with a yorker, Dilshan squeezes it out towards midwicket and they take on Guptill's arm to complete the second
full ball angling across the right-hander, Mathews drives towards extra cover
full ball, which Dilshan tries to smash over long-on but mis-times it. The ball reaches the fielder on the bounce
New Zealand taking their time with field placements ... Southee to bowl, from round the wicket. He usually aims for the blockhole wide outside off stump.
a wild swing to a straight ball, inside edge past short long leg and Oram dives and saves brilliantly on the deep backward square rope, could be a vital save that
well bowled, right up in the block hole, pushed out to extra cover
