victory for Delhi, gift ball, flighted on leg stump, plants his foot forward and carts it over long-on to seal Punjab's fate
Kings XI vs Daredevils, 3rd match at Cape Town, IPL, Apr 19 2009 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Daredevils won by 10 wickets (with 7 balls remaining) (D/L method)
Delhi had it a little easy with the match reduced to six overs due to the rain-break but it was the spell from Vettori that turned the tide in their favour. Goel gave Punjab an excellent start, which was almost undone by the batsmen who followed, as they struggled after the first timeout to get it going. Delhi managed to restrict the opposition down to a reachable score, and Sehwag and Gambhir made easy work of it. They had started well before the rain, which made their task much easier after the target had been revised.
We're still waiting for the presentation, so stay tuned.
Yuvraj SIngh: "The break after six overs didn't help us as we lost momentum. Duckworth-Lewis gives the team batting second the advantage in these situations, Goel played well for us. Hopefully it'll be great for him. We had a great tournament last year, and hopefully this one will be the same. Brett Lee's working on his fitness, and as soon as he is ready, we'll play him."
Virender Sehwag: "I just told Gambhir to bat out the overs and that I'll go after the bowling. It's easier for the chasing team with the rain interruptions. I was prepared for a score of 120-130 even after that good start from Punjab, as we have a good batting line-up to it down. We are hoping to play the finals here if we keep continuing like this."
Daniel Vettori is the Man of the Match, no surprises there.
Vettori: "It's nice to have Sehwag and Gambhir in our side, after I bowled to them last series. The spinners are going to play a huge part in the tournament. Spinners have adapted better than anyone else to Twenty20 and they'll have a major influence in this competition. We have a highly strong team, with even great players sitting out, so that says something."
Thanks for tuning in folks, and sending us all your feedback. There's just a bit more time left before Deccan Chargers take on Kolkata Knight Riders. I'll see you there then. Until then, it's goodbye from Siddhartha Talya on the commentary, and Raghav from the scoring desk. See ya!
pushed through quick outside leg, held its line, given a wide
on middle and leg, tickled wide of short fine for a single
short again, pulled away towards deep square leg to bring up the 50, well done these two
short on middle, gets back and punches that between long-on and deep midwicket for a couple, it's skiddy out there in the deep, too many fielders slipping and sliding
flat on middle and off, guided short of point for a single
Breathe easy folks, no tactical breaks now. Thank god. Chawla into the attack
bowled on a good length on the off stump, hits through the line, attempts to clear mid-off but doesn't time it well, falls short
poor ball, but gets away with it, bowled short outside leg stump and Sehwag tries to help that on its way to fine leg, gets hit on the thighs
bowls it on a length, Gambhir comes down the track while simultaneously giving himself room, drives it uppishly towards deep cover
short on the off, chopped away firmly behind point and wide of Pathan at third man for a couple more
lucky, short on middle, stopped on him a little, tried to push that wide of midwicket on the back foot, got a leading edge just wide of Yuvraj at cover
driving length outside off, Gambhir reaches forward and slices it to third man to give his more explosive partner the strike
VRV to bowl now
short and wide, makes room to slash it hard, gets a thick outside edge well wide of Sangakkara for a boundary to third man, they are keen to finish this at the earliest, just 13 more to get now
tries to swipe this one over square leg but it's a little too wide
gets the treatment, full toss on the off stump and he jabs it over deep midwicket, timed superbly, just punched at it and it sailed over the ropes
on middle and off, closes the face to play it down to long-on
Sangakkara fumbles to concede a bye, good length outside off and Sehwag has a waft at it, misses
round the wicket, slower one immediately on middle and leg, nurdled for a single behind square
Vikramjeet Malik to bowl now
abysmal fielding by VRV Singh in the deep, drills a low full toss down the ground and VRV running to his right from long-off tries to drag it back in with his foot and misses
Right, so all set!
4.06 pm: We have a shortened game folks. The target for Delhi is now 54 in six overs. So that's 30 more from 25 balls. It's their game to lose from here on. Each bowler can bowl a maximum of two overs each, and no more fielding restrictions.
4.01 pm: Things look much better. The rain has stopped, the covers are completely off and we should get a start sometime soon. In fact, play will resume in nine minutes, at 4.10 pm local.
Mark: "Ironically enough it's currently blue skies and sunshine in the south of England, lovely cricket weather. Should have had the IPL here!" Here we go again.
3.53 pm: The covers are off the pitch now, and there's some activity on the field. The umpires are out, so the rain may have stopped, or subsided a little. But given the intensity of the rain when it interrupted play, it could well be that enough damage would have been done. Let's hope not. A bit of a mess out in the middle as the groundstaff, while taking out the covers, spilled some water in the area near the bowling crease. That might take some time to clear now.
3.43 pm: It doesn't seem to have subsided yet. The match was interestingly poised, but what a spoiler this has turned out to be. The minimum number of overs to decide a rain-affected T20 match is five overs. Delhi, at this stage, would have needed 45 in five overs to win this match, but that seems irrelevant now with only 1.5 bowled.
They've gone off now. The rain's too heavy, and the umbrellas are out. Could this be the end? Delhi have started well here, but the rain's too strong. The covers are being brought on, and things suddenly look ominous.
good length outside off, chases it, slashes hard, gets a thick edge well over slip for a boundary
The rain's picked up momentum, and it seems they'll go off in a bit
