Pickwick Cricket Club is looking for a new home but, according
to president Steve Marshall, they will have a lot of difficulty
in finding one.
Marshall told NATIONSPORT yesterday that to relocate from
Kensington when the lease expires on February 18, 2004 would be
extremely problematic and the club's finances would not allow
for it.
"To find a new home we would need help from Government and the
Barbados Cricket Association (BCA)," Marshall said. "We can't do
it on our own, such a venture would cost too much money."
He added that to move would cause some dislocation among club
members and it would force Pickwick to reorganise club life.
Pickwick, one of the oldest and most successful cricket clubs in
the region, has been using the Oval since the late 1800s. The
BCA has taken over ownership of the facility, making it
necessary for Pickwick to move.
Marshall recognised the difficulty in starting from scratch,
bearing in mind the demands and regulations for teams competing
in the BCA domestic competitions.
"You have to get a ground of the highest standard," he said,
"This would take at least a year and if we were to get the
facility, obviously you would want it to be 'something
special'."
Marshall said that if they were to find a new home they would
want a multi-purpose facility with the ability to stage sports
and social events.
"We want a property, not only for cricket but for other sporting
disciplines. Ideally, we would like to have tennis courts and
squash courts to attract members to the club," Marshall said.
