Thursday 3rd September - England coach
reprimanded after comments on Sri Lankan spinner
England cricket coach David Lloyd has been "severely
reprimanded" following his comments on Sunday about the
bowling action of Muttiah Muralitharan, and the subsequent
row during the tea interval with Geoffrey Boycott on the
final day of the Test match.
In a statement released by the ECB earlier this afternoon,
Tim Lamb, the Chief Executive said: "David Lloyd has been
severely reprimanded, warned again about his conduct and
left in no doubt as to the responsibilities that go with
such a high-profile position."
Lloyd had questioned the bowling action of the Sri Lankan
spin bowler, which has already been cleared by the ICC
(International Cricket Council). The bowler has a medical
condition which means he cannot straighten his elbow, he
also has a double-jointed wrist. The row in the press box
was provoked when Geoffrey Boycott, whilst discussing the
day's play with David Gower and Richie Benaud, said the
England coach needed to "keep his mouth shut".
The ECB have declined to make any further comments on the
issue; David Lloyd has issued an apology for any offence
his remarks may have caused. Meanwhile Muralitharan has
said he has been approached by several of the English
first-class counties to play for them next season.
