Guyana hoping to make it third time lucky

Discovery Bay, Jamaica - Consistent Guyana want to make it third time lucky when they battle Barbados in the first semifinal of the Red Stripe Bowl today.

Guyana team manager/coach Clyde Butts said he hoped his side could go all the way and take the title to Georgetown after finishing runners-up in the last two championships.

"I think the guys have been disappointed that they got to the final in the last two years and were beaten. They want to go one step further," Butts said.

"We have been taking one match at a time but Barbados have been playing some good cricket and if you look at their batting, it is very strong."

The final will be held at the Kaiser Sports Club.

The unbeaten Guyanese should be marginal favourites against title-hungry Barbados who have not won the title in 10 years.

Tomorrow, holders Leeward Islands, boasting four titles - one was shared - in the last six years, meet Trinidad and Tobago, who have been just as successful since the turn of the 90s.

Barbados are the only semifinalists who have not won a one-day title this decade, but they have played in four finals.

Though local fans would be disappointed that Jamaica are out of the final four, thousands of spectators are expected for all three matches.

A full dish of entertainment is in store for the grand final on Monday.

It will feature live performances during the lunch break and a massive after-match party.

The headline act of the afternoon programme is Jamaican reggae superstar Mr. Vegas. He is certain to perform his 1998 monster hit Heads High before an expected crowd of about 6 000.

The lunchtime package will also include Admiral Bailey and the seasoned Byron Lee and The Dragonaires.

At the conclusion of the match there will be a big fete, featuring Stone Love, that is expected to go well into the night.
