Perth, Nov 27: Any hopes that Pakistan might have entertained of salvaging something from this final Test diminished rapidly as the match progressed on the second day.
Parading his unquestionable prowess for the first time in this series, Ricky Ponting struck a test career best 197 as he and Justin Langer, resuming their overnight stand put the game beyond Pakistan. In the process they put together the highest partnership for any wicket between the two countries. The fact that from Langer's eventual dismissal for an innings-reviving 144 until the last wicket fell on 451, Australia had lost six for 70 mattered little as the door had already been shut on Pakistan.
Pakistan have been totally outplayed during the two days of this Test. Their batsmen have not been able to cope with Australia's attack on the fast, bouncy pitch and the bowlers have been flogged. Despite Pakistan having arguably the world's best bowling attack, it has largely been ineffective. It had been muted by the strips in Brisbane, in the first Test, and Hobart in the second.
Here too it has made little impression in the first innings and it can be said with a degree of confidence that it will not be given much of an opportunity the second time round as in all probability Australia will not need to bat much then, if at all.

Indian bowling limitations exposed

India's bowling limitations were exposed at the first opportunity on the second day of their opening tour match against Queensland at Brisbane on Saturday

India's bowling limitations were exposed at the first opportunity on the second day of their opening tour match against Queensland at Brisbane on Saturday. Scoring at a brisk rate of well over four runs an over, the home team rattled up 363 for seven wickets off 87 overs at stumps, gaining a lead of 86 runs.
The biggest disappointment was Anil Kumble who finished the day with the unenviable bowling figures of 26-0-121-0. It was left to new boy T Kumaran, a surprise selection for the tour, to check Queensland after ML Love and Andrew Symonds had put them in a position of considerable strength with a fourth wicket stand of 204 runs off 40 overs. Both got hundreds, Love scoring 120 and Sydmonds 161.
The Indians got the encouragement of an early wicket when Maher (10) was leg before to Mohanty at 30 in the tenth over. However Hayden and Love then added 61 runs for the second wicket from 18 overs before the former was caught by Dravid off Venkatesh Prasad. Hayden's 44 was compiled off 77 balls and he hit six fours and a six.
Skipper Stuart Law had the mortification of being run out by Kumble without facing a single ball and Queensland at this stage were 91 for three in the 29th over. But then Love and Symonds got entrenched without much difficulty. Soon they were doing pretty much what they liked with the bowling, being particularly severe on Kumble. It was Kumaran who finally broke the stand when he had Love caught by Venkatesh Prasad. Love faced 174 balls during his four hour stay at the crease hitting 10 fours.
