plays inside the line and gets his off stump pegged back. That is India's first innings win in the West Indies. A shortish ball pitches outside off and is virtually allowed to go past him by Gabriel playing down the wrong line
West Indies vs India, 1st Test at North Sound, Jul 21 2016 - Match Result
That's all we have for you from the first Test, join us on July 30 for the second one at Jamaica.
R Ashwin is the Man of the Match. 17th five for in "33 matches, I guess. Maybe I'm the first Ashwin, we'll name it later on [on the equivalent of Bradmanesque for the bowlers]. wasn't finding my rhythm in the first innings. Virat gave me a long spell after lunch today and I was working on my rhythm with Anil bhai as well. Worked on it, you finish your action well, I wasn't getting a long enough spell, but today it was different"
"Wow, I didn't know that [This being India's biggest win outside Asia]. Just feels good to get a win on the board, always good to start well. Good prep time, for three weeks. Everyone was excited, we'd enough practice. It was a complete performance," Virat Kohli says, "Scoring wasn't easy, initially West Indies bowled well. A couple of their bowlers rushed us, 70-odd for 2 with five batsmen, had to take responsibility. Shikhar was playing really well and I wanted to be positive, if you want to win a Test you have to score quickly and get the bowlers a chance to bowl the opposition out twice. Then Ashwin played a brilliant innings down the order, it was a team batting performance. If we're playing five batsmen, we wanted to deepen the order. We had Saha at No. 7 and Ashwin was good enough to bat at No. 6. He was a pure batsman before he became an offspinner. Always good to have someone who can do pretty well in both. Our initial thought was three spinners, but the amount of grass made us go with three quicks. Ishant bowled well without luck. Shami and Umesh were outstanding. They way they bowled on a wicket like this, they rushed the batsmen. Someone like Shami, after surgery to come back and prove himself. He's a perfect Test bowler, hits those perfect deliveries to get batsmen out. Ishant is always consistent, Umesh bowled well too. The challenge for modern day batsmen, switching between batsmen. If you want to be the best, adaptability is one thing you have to do well. The way we prepare is important. Sandeep Patil asked me if I could hit a six through the innings and I said playing five batsmen, I can't hit sixes. We want to win every game we play, that's always been our vision and aim. I'm confident and aim in the skill we have. If they give us a dry wicket, three spinners come into play with Jadeja's batting. In the field we were good too, Saha with six catches. Need to be confident, but not complacent"'
4.00 pm "India put up a pretty good first innings total, we didn't bowl well. It's a daunting task chasing 566. We had some good performances, Brathwaite and Dowrich. Didn't get enough partnerships. Have to bowl better, Shannon bowled very well, Bishoo was decent, but have to bowl well for longer [than we did here]," Jason Holder says "We'll see the conditions in Jamaica and then see the combination. Not too sure of the pitch there. Just think we need to see what happens. Normally its flat. Hard to predict conditions in the Caribbean of late"
Kohli has a stump, Ashwin has a stump, Kumble is with his camera. An impressive performance from India in the first match of a series. At no point did West Indies challenge them enough for the result of this match to be a mystery. The batsmen set it up with a mammoth total, then the fast bowlers made sure a flat pitch looked like a fine pitch - using the only help it offered, bounce - to roll West Indies over and then Ashwin finished off with 7 for 83, first five-wicket haul outside Asia, to go with a Third Test hundred. Question then, will he take the Man of the Match, or will it be Kohli for his maiden double-ton?
"Ind win by Inns & 92 runs - their biggest Test win outside Asia. Prev best: Inn & 90 runs, Bulawayo 2005-06. Ind's 4th inns win o/s Asia," says Bharath Seervi
Manas: "Before we get to the presentation, the Strange Case of Carlos should be discussed. His batting is clearly competent (3 50s in 3 Tests against good opposition) and his bowling is equally clearly very poor. There's a case for him playing as a batting allrounder higher up the order (6 or 7) instead of being viewed as a bowler/bowling allrounder."
good length ball drifting outside off, defended
that was the intention, to make Gabriel slog. Only this time the tailender picks up the generously flighted ball and wallops it to the midwicket boundary
whipped straight at midwicket. Tossed up on the pads, Bishoo goes for another aggressive stroke and doesn't mind the field. Pujara was there, and it went straight to him
Ishant backtracks to his right at long leg, but the ball eludes him easily. Bishoo plays the sweep with the wind and gets a boundary despite not timing it well
confidently behind the shortish delivery on off stump
quicker delivery outside off, Brathwaite moves back for a late cut and gets to his third Test fifty. A measured innings, received with great appreciation from the dressing room
reads the googly - shortish in length - and plays off the back foot to mid-on
well flighted on off stump, Brathwaite defends into the covers. Looks for a single, but is denied
a little flatter through the air, but still full. Brathwaite blocks
goes wide of the crease to toss it up just outside off, defended well
flighted and drifting in on off stump, defended
shout for lbw, as Bishoo goes for a sweep across the line of a ball on off stump. No response from umpire Dar, would have missed off stump
quicker through the air, targeting middle and leg, kept out
pushed through on middle and off, Bishoo gets behind it and flicks to midwicket
tossed up on middle, Bishoo defends well
goes back to block a flatter delivery to short extra cover
deenu: "I think left hand - right hand combination is also a reason why the Indian bowlers are not able to get rid of this partnership."
short ball on off stump, whipped to deep midwicket
another one that turns away, Bishoo reaches out to pat it away
good length ball, steered towards point
