Good Day For Pickwick
by Bernard Babb
Scores: Pickwick 237-7 vs Maple
A stroke-filled century from wicket-keeper Rondell Yearwood kept
Mount Gay Maple toiling and helped ESA Field Pickwick to enjoy
one of their better days of the season.
A promising schoolboy talent who joined the Oval club four
seasons ago, the 23-year-old Yearwood fully capitalised on a
good batting strip to hammer his first ton in Division One.
The right-hander had threatened to break the ice in his first
match of the season against BET, when he scored a solid 85, and
yesterday he found the Maple bowling much to his liking.
He stroked the ball confidently on both sides of the pitch and
slammed 15 fours, reaching three figures off 107 balls in
batting for just over three hours.
Yearwood also figured in two important partnerships, 43 with
Raymond Griffith and then 98 with Neil Weekes for the fifth
wicket, which helped Pickwick to dominate the first day.
He was eventually run out, attempting a quick single, as he was
found short of his ground with a sharp throw from cover from
Donavan Lopez to wicketkeeper Andy Payne.
Yearwood and Weekes had steered a recovery for the Oval side and
Weekes kept the Pickwick innings rolling in the last hour with
some powerful strokeplay, reaching his 50 with a lofted straight
drive which brushed the fingers of off-spinner Matthew Moore.
He was eventually dismissed for 68, falling to a good running
catch by Jefferson Gibbons on the mid-on boundary.
His knock came off 112 balls and included nine fours.
The bespectacled Weekes also shared a stand of 53 for the sixth
wicket with Hendy Hinds who was unbeaten on 22 at the close.
