SRI LANKA SPORTS NEWS AT-A-GLANCE
* Sri Lanka has gone down to the fourth place after their 47-run
loss to Netherlands in the latest Group `B' points table of the
Hero Honda women's World cup tournament now in progress in
India.
New Zealand continued to head the standings though they tied
their last match with India. Table leaders New Zealand have now
gained 21 points with three wins and a tie in four outings.
India is placed second with 18 points with two wins, a tie and a
no decision. Netherlands climbed to the third place displacing
Sri Lanka. They have 9 points with a win, a loss and a no
result. Sri Lanka completed their four league matches with a
win, a no decision and two defeats. West Indies are placed fifth
in Group `B' standings losing three of their four matches and
failed to enter the quarter finals.
A win over Sri Lanka was the Netherlands' first win of the
11-nation tournament. Boosted by an attractive 55 by
vice-captain Nicola Payne, Netherlands made 138 all out off 45.3
overs. But they defended their low total well and bowled out Sri
lanka for 91 in 45.6 overs. Medium pacewoman Sandra Kottman had
4 for 24.
* Former Sri Lanka Test vice captain and stylist middle order
batsman Roy Dias will manage the 20-member Sri Lanka `A' pool
named for the forthcoming home series against England `A'
starting next month.
The Sri Lanka `A' pool include five Test `caps' in Ruwan
Kalpage, Sanjeeva Ranatunga, Russel Arnold, Pubudu Dasanayake
and Dulip Liyanage. Apart from them Hemantha Wickremaratne,
Chaminda Mendis and Eric Upashantha are the Sri Lanka one day
international players who have been included in the pool. The
national selection committee is yet to announce the Sri Lanka
`A' captain.
* Lanka Bell, led by Shan Jurangpathy entered the quarterfinals
of the MCA Division two cricket tournament by defeating ACL
Cables by six wickets in the pre quarterfinal match played at
MCA grounds.
Lanka Bell will now meet Union Assurance in the quarterfinals
scheduled for Saturday at the Health grounds, Castle Street.
