Overthrows! Bangladesh have done it! They have somehow dragged themselves over the line! Mahmudullah drives a full ball to mid-off and takes off for the single. The throw came in at the non-striker's end but was wayward and allows Bangladesh to run a second
Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, 15th Match, Group D at Dallas, T20 World Cup, Jun 07 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
11.30pm So that's that from this spicy rivalry, with Bangladesh taking home the points after a narrow, narrow win. There's more action to come, with South Africa going up against Netherlands and then England taking on Australia (later tonight, or first thing tomorrow, depending on where you're reading this from). For now, on behalf of Madushka and Thilak, this is Abhimanyu signing off.
11.20pm Time for the presentation ceremony.
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto: "Everybody' body language was great, we gave our 120%. Last 10-15 days we have been making plans and all the fielders are doing their job. I think they bowled really well, but on a wicket like this we should have won this easily. Very important for Litton, he's been struggling a bit but he showed his skill today. I think he batted really well. Hridoy was really courageous, the way he played that over really helped us."
Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga: "Our batters batted really well in the first 8-10 overs. After that in the middle overs I think we batted badly. We all know our bowling attack is our strength. Specially if batters put up 150-160, our bowling attack can win games. Last two games the batters didn't do the job. It's tough. First two games we've lost. We bowled with four main bowlers. I think our four genuine bowlers did their job but unfortunately we had to make four overs with our allrounders."
The player of the match is Rishad Hossain. Here's what he has to say: "The pitch was good, I tried my best. [On the hat-trick ball] Yeah I tried to bowl it as normal, did my best."
Dr Nirav Hingra: "Only SA is topping their group at the moment from the full time member.. superb worldcup.."
11.05pm As Bangladesh and Sri Lanka always promise, they have delivered a thriller. On a slightly slow pitch, legspinner Rishad Hossain starred as Sri Lanka were restricted to 124, despite Nissanka's excellent start. Then Sri Lanka got off to a dominant start with the ball thanks to DDS and Thushara, but Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy's partnership was enough to put Bangladesh in a winning position, especially Hridoy's three sixes off Hasaranga. Bangladesh lost a host of wickets after that, but those three sixes ensured the required run rate was manageable and Mahmudullah hung around till the end to give Bangladesh a much needed winning start to their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. It was much closer than it should have been, and Bangladesh know their batting is still a worry, but the two points is what matters most right now for them.
Just one run needed to tie the scores. And two needed for a Bangladesh win
Kusal Mendis with a huge appeal for caught behind. Sri Lanka review. It's all happening. This is dug in short outside off, Mahmudullah has to jump as he looks to cut it. But there's no bat on that. And to make matters worse for Sri Lanka, it's called a wide
Short and wide. Will that be called a wide? Mahmudullah gives a long look to the umpire, but he isn't interested. Dot ball it is
Full on leg, he flicks it away to deep square and gets the single. Mahmudullah back on strike now
Full outside off, it stays low as well, as Tanzim goes for a wild hoick looking to go downtown. No connection made. That one kept quite low there!
Aunim: "Things that always deliver: FedEx, Amazon and Bangladesh Vs Sri Lanka."
Length ball flicked through square leg. And that brings Tanzim on strike
Mahmudullah is not missing out on those! Shanaka starts off with a low full toss and you just can't do that here! Mahmudullah moves across and deposits it over deep square leg. Freebie at this stage, and Bangladesh move to within five runs of victory
Shanaka? Mathews? Who bowls the 19th? Shanaka it is
Very full just outside off, squeezed out to cover. Thushara finishes an excellent spell and he has given Sri Lanka a chance to pull off a heist here
Vismay: "Bangladesh has a knack of losing winnable matches."
Back of length outside off, Tanzim hangs his bat out as he tries to chase the ball but is beaten
Fires one down leg, and it's a wide!
14 balls, 12 runs, two wickets - that's the equation. And this is anybody's game, still! Do not leave your seats! And Thushara is on a hat-trick
Huge appeal as a very full delivery hits Taskin on the foot. Or did he get bat on that? Not given out, but Sri Lanka review. Wait, that's hit Taskin full on the toe. Brilliant yorker. Pitching on leg and that's hitting the stumps! Sri Lanka have two in two, and suddenly, this game has turned on its head!
CJay: "Surely Matthews and Shanakar get the last two overs" - has to be them! Anyway, here's Taskin Ahmed
Through him! Thushara gets his third. Rishad looks to come down the track and misses, and loses his stumps! Thushare goes full length around middle, not quite in the slot, and Rishad was looking to back away and hit it over cover. But he is cleaned up, and Sri Lanka smell an opening!
Bouncer outside off, Rishad looks to ramp but can't connect. And the umpire brings his arms up to signal a wide
Length ball outside off, Mahmudullah is able to turn it square on the leg side
RajeshBanda : "Those 3 consecutive sixes are really going to hurt Sri Lanka. For me, that was a game changing moment."
In the blockhole on off stump, fended back to the bowler
Three overs to go. Four wickets left for Bangladesh. 14 runs needed for the win. You'd still tip the team in green to get the job done, but stranger things have happened in this sport, especially when these two teams are involved. Thushara to bowl out now
Length ball outside off, chopped to backward point. Good over from Pathirana
Slower ball, full on off, clipped away to deep square leg
Very full on middle and off, flicked to midwicket
Almost picks out mid-off! Length ball outside off, Rishad looks to muscle it over cover but miscues it. The ball pops up and mid-off is running to his left, but it lands safe
Here's Rishad. He can bat!
Theekshana takes an excellent catch running to his left from deep third! This is dug in short and across Shakib, who looks to play the ramp. Theekshana not only has to move to his left, but also dive in front and take it low. Not always the safest fielder, he has made sure to grab this one, Theekshana! This match is well and truly on, still!
Fired full around off, squeezed out to the leg side for a single
Pathirana is back
Over 19 • BAN 125/8
Bangladesh won by 2 wickets (with 6 balls remaining)
