Nisitha Rupasinghe's century - the highest
By S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South group corr.
A FINE century by tail under batting at No. 8 by Sri Lanka under
19 player Nisitha Rupasinghe 105 (16 fours) helped Kingswood to
recover and finish with honours in their inter-school cricket
match against St. Sylvesters College which ended in a draw at
Peradeniya yesterday.
Nisitha Rupasinghe who is essentially a bowler capturing a match
bag of 9 for 102 in the match came into bat when the
Kingswoodians were struggling at 119 for 7 in reply to
Sylvestrians total of 250 using attack as the best form of
defence he sprayed the opponents attack to all parts of the
ground he was involved in two match stands - first with Amila
Weerasuriya (39) putting on 65 for the seventh wicket. He next
put on 111 for the eight wicket with Chamara Seneviratne (39)
and this blasted Sylvestrians hopes of forcing a victory.
Chaminda Bandara captured 7 for 112 for the Sylvestrians.
When the Sylvestrians batted the second time 15 year Chanaka
Wijesinghe belted the bowling to all parts of the ground to
score a quick 73 with 12 fours.

St. Anthony's and St. Sebastian's joint champs of U.13 cricket
By S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen Kandy South Group Cor.
ST. ANTHONY'S College, Katugastota and St. Sebastian's College
Moratuwa became joint champions of the Schools Under 13 Division
I cricket tournament for the Horlicks Trophy when the final
ended in a no decision at Katugastota recently.
This was for the third successive year in which the Antonians
had ended in the top slot of this tournament. In 1995 they
became champions under Nafees Nizam and the following year, they
were joint champions with Malayadeva College, Kurunegala. Then
again they became joint champions in the 1997 tournament which
was concluded in 1998.
The Antonians were distinctly unlucky not to have won this match
against the Sebastianites who batted for 123 overs for their 279
for 9 declared.
The Antonians who went into bat only at 11 am on the second day,
made a valiant effort to snatch victory and were 259 for 6 off
87 overs just 20 runs away from victory. M. Ruzly (59) and N.
Ratnayaka (95) treated the bowling with scant respect and they
were dismissed in trying to force the pace.
Tyronne Silva who in the preliminary round matches had the rare
distinction of scoring a century in the morning and another in
the afternoon in the same match, turned in a good all round
performance to capture 4 for 33 and also scored a hard hit 31.
St. Sebastians College 279 for 9 wickets decl. in 123 overs (M.
Neomal 46, S. Shehan 14, S. Nuwan 33, D. Perera 51, M. Tharaka
54 not out, M. Premasiri 17, T. Silva 4 for 33, D. Perera 2 for
50, M. Ruzley 2 for 36).
St. Anthony's College 259 for 6 wickets in 87 overs (N.
Ratnayake 95, M. Ruzley 59, T. Silva 31, S. Swarnatillake 18, N.
Nilukshan 2 for 45, M. Tharaka 2 for 49).
St. Anthony's-Nalanda drawn
By Kandy South Group Cor.
GOOD BOWLING by spinner S. de Silva who captured a match bag of
9 for 132 and an aggressive knock of 91 with 6 fours and a six
by S. Rodrigo for Nalanda Widyalaya was the highlight of their
inter-school cricket match against St. Anthony's College, Kandy
which ended in a tame draw at Katugastota this week.
This match was earlier scheduled to be played in Colombo but the
venue and the date had been changed unannounced.
Four the Antonians, Ravindra Wickremapala made a polished 80
which included 8 fours, 1 six and a seven. This was a very rare
incident in school cricket in the hill capital when seven runs
had been scored off a single delivery.
Ravindra Wickramapala glanced spinner S. de Silva to the leg
side and ran two and decided to take the third run at a risk
after the fielder had misfielded. The fielder on seeing the
batsmen half way down the pitch, made a direct throw at the
stumps which was off target and the ball sped to the boundary
for four overthrows making a total of seven runs.
St. Anthony's College 200 for 8 decl. in 58.3 overs 230 mts.
(Ravindra Wickremapala 80, K. Jayaratne 36, M. Pallihakkara 39,
A. S. Pinnaduwa 17, S. Burke 12 not out, S. de Silva 7 for 71)
and 200 for 4 wickets in 65 overs 240 mts. (K. Jayaratne 21 R.
Wickremapala 32, M. Chitrasena, M. Pallihakkara 48 not out, N.
Nizam 16 not out, S. Silva 2 for 61).
Nalanda Vidyalaya 265 for 8 decl in 63 overs 300 mts. (D.
Jayasundera 29, S. Rodrigo 91, D. Dayaratne 20, P. Hedigalla 31,
A. De Silva 51, K. Gangodawila 11, S. Burke 3 for 36, M.
