* The Kandy District inter-club six-a-side cricket tournament
organised by the Kandy District Cricket Association which was
scheduled to be held last Sunday was postponed for next year.
The General Secretary of the KDCA Mike Johnson said that with
the inclement weather prevailing in the hill capital and the
oncoming tour of the Zimbabwe national cricket team for the
cricket Test against Sri Lanka to be played at the Asgiriya
Stadium commencing on January 7, they have decided to postpone
this tournament. This tournament will be now played during the
latter part of January next year.
* Basilica College, Ragama beat St. Thomas College, Panadura, by
four runs in their under-13 second round Horlicks Trophy Cricket
tournament match played on Basilica grounds, Ragama.
Mevan Prasanna of Basilica College scored a briliant century
(111) for the winners, while Heshan Aravinda excelled capturing
3 wickets for 29 runs. Chieef scores: Basilica College 258 for 3
wickets. (Mervan Prasanna 111, Tharaka Sampath 90, M. Delican
25.) >St. Thomas College 255 for 9 wickets. (W. Kammin 58,
S.Manoj 40, Heshan Aravinda 3 for 29, Tharaka Sampath 2 for 80).
* Old Mazenodians beat Dalugama Cricket Club by 62 runs in their
BCCSL division three cricket tournament match played at Kandana.
Taking the first lease, Old Mazenodians made a healthy 252 for 9
in 50 overs. (Sohan Ranga 102, Sumal Chiranthana 66, Akalanka
Yapa 25, Suren Kumara 3 for 32). In reply, Dalugama CC were shot
oout for 190 in 39.4 overs (A.de.Alwis 50, Roshan Jansz 47,Sumal
Chirathana 3 for 27, Rakitha Thilina 2 for 5, Kevin Jansz 2 for
21).
* Dharmaloka Central College, Kelaniya, defeated Nalanda on the
first innings in their Horlicks trophy under-13 Division three
second round cricket tournament match played at Kelaniya.
Dharmaloka, batting first, scored 230 for 8 in 39.2 overs.
(Viraj Sampath 60, Asanka Perera 51, Sajanka Perera 36, Navin
Suranga 25, B.I.Cooray 3 for 45). Nalanda made 119 for 8 in 50

* Australia emerged Women's World Cup cricket champions when
they beat New Zealand by five wickets in the final played at the
Eden gardens in Calcutta. It was the fourth time that the Aussie
women won the world title.
Electing to bat first, New Zealand were shot out for 164 in 49.3
overs. But it was a simple target for the Australian women who
reach the mark in style - scoring 165 for five with 14 balls to
spare. Australia's previous women's World cup success were in
1978, 1982 and 1988.
* South Africa 'A' registered an exciting 19- run win over the
West Indies 'A' on the final day of their four-day unofficial
Test against South Africa 'A' at Newlands in Cape Town. Chasing
a victory target of 267 to win, the visitors were shot out for
247 after resuming the final day at 158 for 5.
Electing to bat first, South Africa 'A' were shot out for 129.
N.A.M.McLean had 3 for 27. But the West Indies 'A' too made only
164 all out in their first innings to gain a close lead. But
South Africa staged a good comeback by scoring 301 ll out in
their second innings, thanks to half centuries by G.F.J.
Liebenberg (53), H.D. Ackerman (69) and D.M.Benkenstein (66).
The visitors were struggling at 85 for 5 at one stage but a
116-run sixth wicket stand between L.R.Williams (84) and R.L.
Hoyte (38) helped them to give a good run to the South Africans.
Hayward (3 for 82) and Botha (3 for 37) shared the wickets for
the winners.
Draw at Negombo
The inter-school cricket encounter between Maris Stella and Sri
Pannananda ended in a draw at the Maris Stella ground,
yesterday.
Maris Stella 220 for 6 dec. and 148 for 5 at close ( D. Vas
Gunawardena 43, C. Croos 36 no, K. Bulathsinhala 32, S.
Gunewardena 22, N. Gunatilleke 2 for 43). Sri Pannananda 56 for
one contd. 222 for 8 dec.

A cracker jack knock of 176 with 23 fours and nine sixers in
only 122 balls by Pubudu Seneviratne helped Dharmaraja College
to score an easy 150_run win over the visiting Karachi Grammar
School, Pakistan in a limited over cricket match played at Lake
View grounds, Kandy on Sunday.
Dharmaraja College 305 for 2 in 35 overs (S. Ranasinghe 29, Y.
Jayasundera 11, C. Werake 62, Pubudu Seneviratne 176).
Karachi Grammar School 155 all out in 30 overs (A. Razik 12, U.
Balagamwala 21, A. Funituidwall 59, T. Salahuddin 15, W. Herath
3 for 21, C. Kaduruwewa 3 for 13, N. Nagahapitya 2 for 13).
