A sparkling century by Hilmy Marikar 120 enabled the newly formed
United Cricket Club of Zurich to register a thrilling 26-run victory over reigning champions Jaffna Cricket Club of Lausanne in
their Swiss Cricket Council Limited overs match played at Geneva
recently.
Marikar was associated in a 130-run partnership for the third
wicket with skipper A. Aravindran. Marikar slammed 9 huge sixers
and 8 fours in his breezy knock which was also studded with 8
boundaries.
Skipper Aravindran had 8 fours, in his knock of 74. S. Thewar
also batted well to remain unbeaten with 45 as the United Cricket
Club of Zurich raced to 316 for 6 off their allocated 40 overs.
Jaffna Cricket Club of Lausanne made a spirited reply scoring 290
all out in 38 overs, just falling short by 27 runs for victory.
G. Ganesh 66, A. Selvam 60, T. Uthayan 35 and M. Benson 52 batted best for the Jaffnamen based in Lausanne. Manu Prasad 4
for 66 and Senthur Vasan 2 for 45 bowled best for the winners.
In another match in the same tournament also played at Geneva,
The United Cricket Club of Zurich defeated the strong Sri Lanka
Cricket Club of Geneva by 6 wickets.
The architect of the win was V. Gnanasunderam who bagged 6 for 34
including the hat trick. Hilmy Marikar batted best for the
winners making a solid 76. Sri Lanka Cricket Club of Geneva were
the runners - up last season. They were led by former Wesley College cricketer Dugel Jansz.
