Foundation Shaky In Cricket

Deighton Griffith came to the BET ground with a plan, and it worked yesterday against Foundation on the second day of the Cable and Wireless BET Under-15 cricket final replay.

With the first day lost to rain, Deighton Griffith's coach Marven Alleyne said his team came specifically to "bowl one side of the wicket". After 45 overs Foundation had laboured to 70 for five.

"The plan worked. In the first game last week, we realised that their top batsman (Dwayne Farrell) was strong off his legs," Alleyne said.

"The batting revolves around him, so we knew if we held him tight the others would struggle and we could be in with a good chance."

Farrell made 86 in last week's no-decision, which forced this week's game, but was affected by a stomach complaint yesterday and after retiring hurt at the tea break, returned ten minutes from the close to be seven not-out.

Foundation's coach Dennis Osbourne conceded that his side were a bit slow but promised a more urgent approach today.

"We allowed the bowling to get on top and unfortunately we have to continue batting and hope for a sizable score," he said. "We aim to speed up the tempo without taking too many chances."

Foundation, sent in to bat, struggled from the moment play got going after an hour-long delay caused by a wet outfield.

Leg-spinner Kenroy Williams was the main threat, taking two for ten off ten overs in which he posed endless problems.

Operating unchanged from the southern end, the small leggie often served up his googly to timid, unsuspecting batsmen. He had Dwayne Hayde caught behind by 'keeper Hendy Blades, and then produced a fine delivery which also accounted for Jamal Forde, also caught behind.

After reaching 14 in 79 minutes off 60 balls, Forde played back to a ball which pitched on leg-stump and spun to off. He followed the line and edged into the gloves of Blades. Immediately the batsman set off to the pavilion without waiting for the umpire's verdict.

Williams bowled well in tandem with captain Derick Bishop, who although not getting a wicket with his left-arm spin, held a tidy line.
