Former Pakistan captain Majid Khan Saturday said he would
serve on the three-man Referees Commission despite
objections by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
"I have not been provided with the terms of references of
the committee but I have confirmed my availability to serve
on it," Majid, a former match referee and chief executive of
the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said from Lahore.
Majid admitted he was bemused by BCCI objections against
him. "After the 1999 follies, didn't India ban its players
or South Africa suspend its captain. I don't think my
remarks on World Cup has got anything to do with this. "I
don't see how India can embarrass me," Majid, who played his
last Test against India at Lahore, said.
He added: "The last thing I saw in the newspapers was that
they (BCCI) have objected against the entire panel. But it's
a news to me that they have singled me out."
Majid admitted last year that he informed Dr Ali Bacher that
Pakistan threw World Cup matches to India and Bangladesh in
the 1999 World Cup.
Pakistan has already set up an inquiry commission to probe
the allegations.
Majid said he supported the role of match referees in the
game and also agreed that there should be right of appeal
against the referees decision. "If there is right of appeal
against a court's decision, why can't there be right of
appeal against match referee's decision.
"The match referees were introduced after all the Test
playing countries felt they would be of immense use. Now it
looks strange that a country stands up and protests against
match referee because its players have been penalized," he
said.
Majid, popularly known as The Majestic for his glorious
strokes, said he didn't see the actions which forced
Englishman Mike Denness penalize six Indian cricketers in
South Africa last year.
"Naturally when Mike Denness's decisions will be reviewed,
the committee will be provided with all the relevant
material. Before that, I don't want to make any comments on
the issue," he said.
