Ace tourney on turf
One of the salient features of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) trophy
tournament which is currently held in Kathmandu, Nepal, is that for
the first time, the matches are being played on turf wickets.
This has been made possible by Thilanga Sumathipala, the ACC president
whose vision is to develop cricket in the Asian region.
All previous tournaments in this series were played on Astro turf
pitches.
The tournament is being run by the ACC of which Saliya Ahangama, is
the secretary and Nuski Mohamed, the treasurer. Carlton Bernadus has
been appointed the development officer of the ACC.
Ten countries are participating in the tournament - Bangladesh, Hong
Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Japan, Maldives, Thailand and
Brunei.
The winners of this tournament qualify to play in the Asia Cup with
India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh won the ACC tournament last
year beating UAE in the final.
