Jones fears for Glamorgan's future

Simon Jones fears for the future of his former club Glamorgan as they plough huge amounts of money into hosting the 2009 Ashes Test in Cardiff and says he didn't feel valued enough to extend his career in Wales.

Jones, who left Glamorgan for Worcestershire at the end of the 2007 season, believes the financial problems which have hit the club in recent years will continue unless regular international matches are staged at Sophia Gardens.

"Glamorgan have put a lot of resources into staging an Ashes Test match in 2009 but I'm worried that if they don't get to host more Test matches after that then they could be in trouble financially," Jones told the South Wales Argus.

His comments come following his move away from Glamorgan after 13 years with the club. After an injury-plagued two years, where he barely managed to get on the field, he was offered a pay-per-play deal but decided it was time to look elsewhere as he tries to resurrect his career.

"If I'm honest I was going stale at Glamorgan and after 12 or 13 years at the county change was needed," he said. "The ground is being developed yes but I didn't think I was valued enough to stay there."

"There were other options for me but I liked Worcestershire's ideas so I thought it was the best option for me to change county."

However, Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin is confident they have the plans in place to succeed even if they don't stage Tests after the Ashes. "We've obviously worked hard to develop the venue to attract the Ashes Test in 2009 but we have been prudent in terms of the assumptions we have made about Test matches allocated in the future.

"We are also working hard on maximising corporate, sponsorship and non-cricket income so that the business isn't therefore dependent on us having Test matches every year."
