Old Cambrians 1st innings lead of 1 run
OLD CAMBRIANS squeezed out a first innings lead of just one run
over Kurunegala Sports Club in a division one segment 'B' match
of the Sara Trophy cricket tournament at the Welegedera Stadium
yesterday.
Kurunegala Sports Club made 226 for 9 wickets declared and Old
Cambrians made 227. In the second innings, Kurunegala Sports
Coub were 175 for 5 wickets at close of play.
The match will be continued today at 10 am.

Twin centuries by Seneviratne
TWIN centuries by De Mazenod skipper Priyasad Seneviratne (102
and 105) was the highlight of high-scoring drawn inter-school
cricket match against St. Anne's at Kandana yesterday.
Seneviratne made 102 in De Mazenod's first innings total of 297
and in their second innings, he made 105 not out in the total of
159 for one wicket.
St. Anne's made 301 in their first innings, with N. Eddegoda
top-scoring with 60 and K. Jayasundera and S. Mendis getting 57
runs each.
De Mazenod 297 and 159 for 1 wkt (Priyasad Seneviratne 105 not

THE inter school cricket match between St. Peter's and St.
Benedict's ended in a predictable draw at Bambalapitiya
yesterday after both sides topped over 200 runs in their first
innings.
St. Peter's made 270 for 6 wickets declared on Friday and St.
Benedict's made 226 for 7 wickets declared yesterday when they
continued from 90 for 2 wickets overnight.
In the second innings, Peterite skipper Malinda Warnapura (77
not out) and Ranga Dias (24 not out) added 83 runs in their
unfinished fourth wicket stand. In the first innings, M. Perera
made 117 not out in the total of 270 for 6 wickets declared.

Singha SC - 1st innings points
SINGHA SC have already obtained first innings points over Moors
in their Saravanamuttu Trophy (Segment 'A') cricket match at
Braybrooke Place. Singha made 278 and Moors in reply were shot
out for 216. Singha in their second turn were 100 for 4 at close
yesterday.
There were two half centuries in Singha's first innings. They
were by Saman Jayantha (53) and A. D. B. Ranjith (55), while K.
Jayasinghe knocked up 54 for Moors. In their second innings,
Singha's T. M. Dilshan was unbeaten on 70.

Holy Cross beat Kannangara MV by 8 wkts
HOLY CROSS trounced C.W.W Kannangara MV, Matugama by 8 wickets
in their schools cricket match at Kalutara yesterday. Kannangara
MV made 255 in their first innings while Holy Cross replied with
275. But in their second turn Kannangara MV flopped and were all
out for 89 leaving Holy Cross to make 70 runs to win which they
achieved for the loss of two wickets.
The highlight of the game was the right-arm medium-pace bowling
of Holy Cross skipper Chaminda Ruwan Kumarage. He captured 6 for
23 and in eight games so far has taken 54 wickets. He has also
scored 798 runs so far which includes two centuries and five
half centuries.

captured 6 for 77 and two good knocks of 78 (10 fours, 1 six) by
Waruna Herath and 55 not out (4 sixes, 5 fours) by Dimuthu
Bandara helped Dharmaraja College to steal the honours in their
inter school cricket match against Maliyadewa College which
ended in a draw at Lake View yesterday.
Devans who were forced to follow on were saved by a stubborn
unbroken partnership of 75 for the fourth wicket between Iroshan
de Silva 35 not out and Gehan Samarawickrema 42 not out.

Rajans tour India

DHARMARAJA COLLEGE Kandy cricket team will make its first ever
tour of India on February 16 at the invitation of Gopalapura
Sports Club, Madras.
The Rajans will play five limited over matches during their
ten-day stay including matches against M. R. Foundation and
Indian Cement Company.
Team will be led by Waruna Herath and will be accompanied by the
principal Mr. W. M. Bandaranayake and coach Ananda Wijesekera.
Three declarations, but Royal-Wesley drawn

THOUGH Wesley had a 19-run lead over Royal in the first innings
the latter by virtue of their outright win under Nalliah Rajan
in 1995 retained the Sir Frank Gunasekera Memorial Shield in
their schools cricket match at Reid Avenue yesterday. Wesley
made 249 for 8 declared in their first innings with Royal in
reply declaring at 230 for 8. In their second turn, Wesley once
again declared at 173 for 5 leaving Royal a victory target of
making 194 runs in only 26 overs. But Royal were 85 for 2 at the
close.
In Royal's first innings Ruchira Jayasuriya (56 with four
boundaries) and Shanaka Perera (67 with 10 fours) put on 71 runs
for the fourth wicket while Perera and Lasantha Liyanage (27)
made 50 runs for the fifth wicket.
In Wesley's second innings there was a good 63 run stand for the
second wicket by A. Jaldeen (39 with five fours and six) and
Nalin Balasuriya (36) while Prasad Amarasekera (38) and Indika
Ranasinghe (15 not out) put on 44 runs for the fourth wicket.
Ruchira Jayasuriya (34 not out with three boundaries) and Jehan
Mubarak (not out 35 with seven fours) put on 69 runs for the
unbroken third wicket in Royal's second turn after they lost two
quick wickets for 16.

CENTURIES by Hirantha Wijesinghe(121) of Mahinda and
M.Pushpakumara (118) and a match bag (10 for 129) by Sajith
Rupasinghe both from Ananda were the main feature of their drawn
cricket encounter at Ananda Mawatha yesterday.
Wijesinghe's century helped Mahinda reach 291 in the first
innings and Pushpakumara's 'ton' compiled off 92 balls with a
six and 19 fours was chiefly responsible to see Ananda reach 314
for 9 declared.
Ananda openers Lakshan Fernando and Lahiru Chaturanga who were
unseparated with a stand of 85 overnight put on 108 but, lost
five wickets for 49 runs.Pushpakumara along with Maduranga
Mallawarachchi(24) added a further 87 runs for the seventh
wicket before they closed their innings at 314 for 9 facing 68.4
overs.

Roshan leads but Upeka close behind
A KEEN tussle for the top spot in the Most Popular Schoolboy
Cricketer of the Year Contest is on. Roshan de Silva of St.
Joseph's College, Colombo who was second at the end of voting on
coupon number one, has hit the front with 444 vote, but close on
his heels is Thomian cricketer Upeka Fernando with 420 votes.
The contests are organised by The Observer and sponsored by Bata
Shoe Company of Ceylon Limited.
The previous week's lead Tharindu Wickremasinghe of Thurstan
College is in third position with 178 votes.
In the Outstation Contest, there is a new leader and Lalin
Anthonisz of Maris Stella heads the list with 153 votes. Last
week's lead C. Wijesinghe of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy is
second presently with 89 votes.
