Opener Daleen Terblanche scored a fine unbeaten half century to take South Africa to 157-5 on a weather-curtailed opening day of the one-off Test against the Netherlands in Hazelaarweg, Rotterdam.
Put into bat by the Netherlands, who became the 10th country to play a women's Test, South Africa made a confident start when the two Terblanches, Daleen and Claire, put on 72 runs for the first wicket.
The partnership ended when 22-year-old Claire fell to Mandy Kornet who earned the distinction of picking up the first Test wicket for the Netherlands. Claire, making her debut, scored 30.
South Africa skipper Cri-Zelda Brits replaced Claire Terblanche and played a few exquisite shots as she dominated the 29-run partnership with Daleen by scoring 21.
Brits became the first of two wickets for Caroline de Fouw who finished the day with figures of 13-0-21-2.
The Netherlands opening bowler Jolet Hartenhof also enjoyed a successful first day with figures of 2-41.
When stumps were drawn on a day that saw only 59.2 overs bowled, Daleen Terblanche was undefeated on a flawless 60. It was the 37-year-old's best score after scores of 25, 2, 4, 12, 41 and 19 in her previous six innings in three Tests.
