Waqar first to be fined for ball tampering 'altering the condition of the ball'

At a hearing to consider the report made by Match Referee Mr John Reid
on 8th July 2000, regarding the breach of ICC Code of Conduct - Rule 1
and 2 - and the laws of cricket, rule 42.4, against Waqar Younis and
Azhar Mahmood for altering the condition of the ball during the South
Africa versus Pakistan ODI match at Premadasa International Stadium on
the 8th July.
The referee considered that the incident, which was clearly visible on
television, very serious, as he had already been warned during the 3rd
test match played at Asgirya Stadium in Kandy (28th June - 2nd July).
Waqar Younis was fined 50% of his match fee and given a one ODI match
suspension with immediate effect.
Azhar Mahmood has been fined 30% of his match fee.
Moin Khan, the Pakistan Captain, who is responsible for his teams
actions on the field has been severely reprimanded for allowing the
spirit of the game to be impaired.
